Missing Fuji simulations

I have just updated to the latest DXO version and now many Fuji film simulations, such as Classic chrome are greyed out, though they do still appear in the Preset folder and they are still available in Filmpack 6 (my current version). Does anybody know what is behind this? Will this in the future only be available for files from Fuji cameras?

Yes, it’s indicated in the release notes:
At the express request of Fujifilm, we have revised how the Fujifilm digital film enderings function in our software.
These renderings now apply exclusively to RAF files from Fujifilm cameras and only correspond to the simulations available on those cameras.

This a great disappointment. Will it at least stay available in DXO Filmpack?

I guess that Fuji forecd you into this. So I am sorry for you, but I probably won’t update my FP6 Fimpack software if that means that many of the most interesting Fuji simulations are lost.

I don’t understand. I thought DXO created their own version of Fuji Film Sims. It would means this work is not patented by Fujifilm right ?

So why DXO accepted such restriction from Fujifilm ? Maybe a patent on the name ? In this case why don’t just rename it ?

I use Fujifilm cameras but also others (like DJI Drones) and being able to have a unified color rendering was very convenient (and nice !). These Film Sims were adding significant value to DXO FilmPack.

Should be nice to have an answer from DXO on this subject.

What was posted is the release notes is probably the only answer you will get on the subject. It may have something to do with copyright protection, but I am only guessing.

Well, a quick forum search turned up an indication that this limitation - new in DxO software - already exists in Capture One:

As for DxO: for now, the PhotoLab user guide hasn’t been updated - it still says that Fuji and Nikon film simulations may be applied to images from any camera supported by DxO. But I expect that eventually the user guides and FAQs at support.dxo.com will be updated to reflect the new restriction.

Fuji and Agfa have both been fairly aggressive in protecting their IP (chemistries, looks, data formats, etc) from emulation and cloning. I suspect that if anyone at Kodak had their $hit together, similar actions could be expected.

Think of licensing fonts. “Back in the early days” of document processing on computers, the 3-4 global font foundries (Monotype, Linotype, Heidelberg, Xerox, etc) were VERY aggressive with anyone who packaged look-alike typefaces with software or printers. There is still a very robust market for licensed typefaces.

It took a couple of tech/marketing developments to push past this;

The two Postscript standard font sets (printers first, then display/screen fonts)
Adobe Type Manager with type 1 and 2 font sets
MSFT TrueType.
The ‘open’ TTF and OTF font formats

These apps / formats and the ones that followed, made it possible for artists to create good-enough and similar-enough typefaces, and to share those new typefaces with just about anyone.

If the Fuji situation turns out to be enforcement of IP and patent rights, one solution might be to convert film emulsion looks into LUTs/styles useable in PL with a wink and nod toward the ‘inspiration’ sources. The fate then of FilmPack would have to be very closely looked at.

I think only the names are patented.
DxO has been able to characterize Fuji’s renderings, and will no doubt soon be offering them under a new name.

What I completly do not understand is a lack of Reala Ace film sim. Why Dxo, why?

Because there are copyright issues in using Fuji film sims on other film types that are not yet resolved.

So please explain why:

Capture One has announced that REALA ACE support has been added in Capture One 16.4.4 for the following Fujifilm cameras: GFX100II, GFX100SII, X100VI, X-H2, X-H2s, X-S20, X-T5, X-T50.

Adobe has added Reala Ace support for X-H2S and X-S20 with their latest August 2024 update.

These presets can be applied to fujifilm raws exclusively, just like in FP and PL.

I purchased FP6 and upgraded to 7 essentially for them - do I get a refund? This is rather fucked up as functions are being taken away, especially the ones that I often use. Guess I will stay with < 8.5 before DxO found their way out of this.

But not by DxO. FUJIFILM has always tried to limit the use of their film simulations to the FUJIFILM cameras released with those simulations. (See how their FUJIFILM X Raw Studio software produces a JPEG.)

Their position has always been that only film simulations produced by a FUJIFILM camera are authentic. It appears that they have been able to persuade DxO to cooperate with, and honor, this claim.

I have read more on DPreview forum, and it seems DxO TOOK these simulation from Fujifilm API/Software, and included them into their own Filmpack. This is why Fujifilm is in the right to call out DxO and have the unauthorized use of Fujifilm’s simulation stopped.

But my contract is with DxO only, and now the product is not as it was advertized as it was sold. This is the problem, not how it comes to this.

What contract? You need to read your End User License Agreement.
