Is it possible that the Canon R7 is still not fully supported in 2025 and Version 8.7 Elite?

Hi everyone,
is it possible that the Canon R7 is still not fully supported in 2025 and Version 8.7 Elite?

Especially considering there are also colored pixels showing up in the RAWs that look like hot pixels (on some Pictures)

Just for comparison: on the left DXO, on the right DPP…

Since this issue has been known since 2022 and nothing has changed, can we assume there won’t be a fix?

I’m honestly quite shocked right now — new camera and PhotoLab basically unusable. And no, using extra denoising via DXO is not a the solution.

What DxO software is that? It certainly doesn’t look like PhotoLab. Is it the Mac version?

Here is a new Picture, just for you to be really certain.

What do exactly do you mean?
Do you get “Cannot get BxU value for XY position” error, something like in Bug with Optics Module 1DX + Canon EF200mm f2L IS USM ? Ambiguous lens problems? Your PL photo looks like completely unprocessed…

Still it doesn’t look like PhotoLab 8.7/Win:

  • How did you get the blue vertical bars left to the ON/OFF correction tool buttons? Even in Preset Editor it looks different.
  • How did you get the blue underline under the Compose button?
  • Why no Loupe is seen, although it’s active?

Which AI version do you run?

Then show me a photo of what DxO PhotoLab 8.7 Elite is supposed to look like from your point of view.
And by the way, go mess with someone else.

This is the display the first time you open the application after downloading. Which is not usually kept by the experienced user.
It can be displayed again via Help/Show feature highlights.

I don’t see any colored pixels in your (second) screenshot, except for the power button, the display, and of course the remote control.

Or are you talking about residual chromatic aberrations?
( check → screenshot by @gerarto )

From the screenshot you posted above, it doesn’t look to me that any of the corrections are actually “on” …

For example, if Lens Sharpening Optimization is on/activated (with Feature Highlights option selected) it should look like this;

  • Note the “blue” indicator just to the left of Lens Sharpening Optimization panel heading.

Have you perhaps selected the “No Corrections” preset ?

Those blue lines are all present because he has “Show feature highlights” selected in Help menu.

Here’s one, RAW coming from dpreview Studio Scene comparison tool, RAW at ISO 100 processed by PL8.7. Optical corrections preset applied, camera rendering, 75% jpeg quality, no NR applied (even at ISO 100 it can bring more details). Very little moire in lithography, good AA-filter btw.

Your PL photo looks like totally unprocessed one, something one would expect, while DPP probably applies automatically some corrections specified in the camera – maybe something similar to Nikon Picture Control used with NX Studio. If applying PL Optical Corrections preset leaves the image unsharp, there’s a possible problem with camera/lens module. Is it the case?

Version with DP3 and moire corrections applied, with even less false colors:

DPP works like NX Studio in that it applies all the in-camera settings automatically to RAW files, by default, so that before manual edits are applied the images look just like the Jpeg files straight out of the camera.

Off-topic:
Mark, thanks for info.
I was a bit surprised that my friend, who shoots Canon and is a renowned Jazz photographer, uses DPP almost exclusively and maybe PhotoShop just for slight retouching. He prefers real look, doesn’t care for sharpness or noise, although he shoots at high ISO, but not too high. Obviously he knows the state of mind of various photo juries, as he has won some contests, but his main goal is to produce the perception of what he has actually seen, rather than satisfy others (of course that’s not 100% true). We may quarrel over human perception and photography goals, e.g. he objects when I remove some distracting details from the concert scene, but our final goal is the same – make pictures that stick to your mind. We don’t quarrel over the gear (you are bound to lenses anyway, which may cost much more than cameras) or software, just exchange observations.

EDIT: Of course gear may matter, if you shoot with electronic shutter. The readout time may make a real difference, if shooting fast action. AF is another story. Stop here.

Sorry to digress from the OP’s concerns, but I too was a Canon shooter for many years and back then, before falling in love with PhotoLab 1 in late 2017, I was a Canon 7D Mark II shooter and a Lightroom 6.14 and Canon DPP user.

DPP had a Digital Lens Optimizer feature which improved the quality of images by correcting optical aberrations and diffraction of supported Canon lenses. It was a very useful tool.

Well, the OP has posted three times here, still without clear statement of the problem.
Sorry, but it looks familiar…
Guess why DxO doesn’t want to participate.

@wlodek, @mwsilvers … Did you not notice (?) …

  • The OP’s screenshot shows that none of PL’s corrections are activated

  • See here … It’s a user-error, I suspect.

John

I have an R7 and loads of lenses. Pholab works well with my R7 and all lens combinations.

I have a custom preset setup on import to minimise subsequent processing. Best Raw processor I’ve used.

Yes, I (we) have noticed it, as already mentioned:

Some people use non-cpu lenses, or it’s impossible for PL to identify the lens in certain cases. It would be nice if PL allowed to override the initial lens choice per photo. Maybe asking too much for too little reason.
