DXO's 2024 Black Friday pricing just released

Eagle eyed viewers may have noticed the site was down for maintenance in the last couple of hours.

Well that’s just changed. Black Friday discounts are now available within the shop:

Discounts are also available to existing members to upgrade via their account, if they don’t have the latest version.

In the UK, I’m seeing Photolab 7 to 8 upgrade drop £20 from £99 to £79.99, and ViewPoint 4 from £59 to £49.99.

Аs expected there are no bundle offers.
With these offers, I’ll probably skip Viewpoint 5.
But still: Would you spend 90 euros to upgrade from Viewpoint 3 to Viewpoint 5?

I’m also disappointed in upgrade prices. Only 19 € down from upgrade price PL7/8. And viewpoint is just too expensive. I have VP3. And I will not buy WP5.

Lack of bundles for new licenses should not be a deterrent in US dollars. A’ la carte prices beat the bundled prices of yesterday. I don’t know what more would be expected. Black Friday sales in the USA have traditionally been loss leaders and bait-n-switches and not usually the chance to get what you really wanted for unreasonably low prices.

It perhaps could have been put across more clearly but if there are some items with 50% discount then “up to 50%” is correct and not misleading. Furthermore as it clearly shows the discounts available to you personally DxO can hardly be accused of misleading you at point of purchase. What is the crime then? Raising expectations possibly but that is called marketing.

We do not know that they have been dishonest do we? True we cannot find a 50% discount but as the prices we see are personalised we do not know what is out there? Maybe another question to ask DxO.

Maybe my maths is wrong but I’m seeing e.g. DxO Filmpack 7 go from £129 to £64.99 which is only 40p shy of half price.

That’s the only one that’s a full 50% discount though, others are not as significant.

FP7 is $69.99 in my store which is just a hair shy of 50% off of $139.

Good spot, so up to 50% is correct. That does not mean I necessarily agree with the approach but it is a factual statement.

Also agreed, it’s true but a tiny bit cynical (it’s only one product that comes close to 50% off).

That said, the pricing does seem clear in the image I’ve posted so at least I don’t think it’s deliberately confusing.

Up to us customers if it’s worth the price of upgrading now really. Personally I’ve just upgraded PL to v8 and VP to v5 and am happy with that.

I guess a cynic could call their approach to upgrades and releases a “yearly subscription by another name” but at least we have the option not to upgrade if we see nothing of value. Ultimately I could edit photos to my satisfaction in PL6, 7, and now 8… it’s just feature gluttony that keeps me handing over my money. Whereas e.g. Adobe makes you if you want to have access to the suite ongoing.

the (for me) strangest price policie is Filmpack 7:
new for 69,99 € (from 139 €) and the update only 10 € less: 59,99 € and all for the luminar-mask. I feel a bit exploited.

Last few years offer was definitely better.

While most of the discounts are less than expected, at 50% off, now is the perfect time for those who have been hesitant to purchase FilmPack 7 to make the leap. Keep in mind that using it with an older version of PhotoLab, prior to PhotoLab 7, and probably PhotoLab 6 as well, may mean the latest embedded features might not be available. The standalone version will, of course, work as expected. I would suggest testing the trial version before purchasing.

Buy a second full version when the difference is so small. I’ve had a lot of trouble from DxO support getting my installs authorised (personal use only, but due to the nonsense with minimal OS requirements I’ve done a lot of shuffling of computers in the last three years). I’m stuck with a second PhotoLab license from the ludicrous “We’ll only sell you Nik 3 with a full PhotoLab license!” promotion from a few years ago. I was a lot more enthusiastic DxO supporter then so I chipped in and bought Nik yet again (haven’t done so since and probably won’t again).

ViewPoint is not necessary for a full PhotoLab install but FilmPack is. FilmPack includes FineContrast and Luminosity Masking. I use quite a few of the emulations as the basis for a colour treatment (I’ve picked out my ten or twelve go to and built them into presets, I know exactly what each one does, which one suits which cameras RAW files and how to work with it).

As it’s under £80 I am going to upgrade from 7 to 8 even though fuji files can’t yet take advantage of XD2.
I’m also thinking of taking advantage of the almost 50% off price and getting FilmPack.

If, in the future, I to upgrade PL9 or PL10, will I also have to upgrade FP7, or will it continue to work in the same way with newer versions of PL?

So far, DxO’s behaviour on cross-compatibility of the add-ons has been very reasonable. One version of FilmPack or ViewPoint will usually work with three or four versions of PhotoLab. DxO’s commercial behaviour has become more predatory over the last four years, so who knows going forward.

These days the old licenses are pulled when one updates, so when the software is close to half price it makes more sense to buy another copy (if one uses older computers).

What exactly do you mean by that?

You cannot use the older versions of the software and face a lot of trouble getting authorisations out of support.

Ok, didn’t notice that topic yet, sorry for interruption.

It’s an insta-buy for me with the discount. I only had Photolab and Viewpoint to upgrade, since all my other stuff is current.

This is the easiest photography purchase I make.
