I think the new image stacking feature in PL9 is a good thing. Unfortunately, it hinders my individual workflow. It’s annoying to have to turn off stacking in every folder after every change. Is there an option, perhaps in the preferences, to turn off stacking altogether?
I don’t get what you are talking about. For me, stacking only happens when I manually turn it on for one particular image at a time.
When I have virtual copies for multiple images in a folder, Master, 1, 2, 3, etc. are always displayed. However, I would like to have all virtual copies listed consecutively. I can set this up using the “virtual copy number” sorting option, but this only works after I have selected all files and clicked “remove stack.” I suspect that stacking is always enabled and has a higher priority than sorting with “virtual copy number.” (Win 11, PL9.2.1)
Yes, the decision to automatically assign Stacking membership to newly created Virtual Copies was a very poor design/implementation feature of PLv9.

Firstly, there is not much real point to it - because, although stack membership is assigned to VCs, they are not automatically stacked (thank goodness - that would be even worse!) … so that actually creating a stack is still requires an additional manual step … so that not much has been achieved (other than really annoying users who don’t want VCs stacked in the first place).
-
Then there’s the “visual clutter” created by having un-stacked VCs highlighted as stack-members - with contradictory numbering identification on each member.
-
And, as @HGF points out, the result is that sorting by “virtual copy number” is broken;
– Exactly !!
Perhaps diligent beta-testers pointed these issues out to the PLv9 dev. team, but;
- perhaps there was so little opportunity for meaningful interaction between beta-testers and their handlers that the downsides of this decision was not properly understood;
- and/or perhaps the PLv9 design team chose to proceed regardless.
Who knows ?!
I generally like it the way it is (with the same background color), but perhaps DxO should offer it as an option if someone doesn’t want the images to be grouped automatically.
Stacking is useless for me and I would like to have the delete button back.
Others may see it differently, so a customization option would be welcomed.
