How does ‘Show masks’ work?

Hello, I am testing PL9 and I don’t understand how the masks work in the local adjustments., especially the ‘show masks’ option. I am on a Mac. I can mask something, and then when I want to do some edits, I would like to switch between hiding and showing the masks with the shift + M shortcut, as indicated in the help menu. But it does not do anything. I can select the parent mask in the right panel, or any sub mask, nothing happens. On the bottom of the screen the option ‘show masks’ is greyed…
