Samsung .dng RAW

Has anyone found a converter for Samsung .dng RAW? DxO does not support it, neither does Affinity. I can’t believe Samsung has made a RAW image that can’t be opened and manipulated.

Typically a RAW provider should deliver a converter. Therefore this question should be forwarded to Samsung.

Yet another reason not to use DNG. Leave your RAWs in their native output. DNG is the worst idea ever.

I’m pretty sure there are RAW converters that can read Samsung .dng files. DxO PhotoLab and PureRAW cannot, for reasons explained at support.dxo.com and elsewhere in this forum. (It’s possible that this will change in the future.) For recent DxO software, it’s better to use HEIC/HEIF as a Samsung output format if that’s available. (It is on my Samsung phone.)

It doesn’t açeoy my HEIC from my 26ultra or the old 22ultra. It does if the files are changed to come from an apple phone. Its there phonrs that are supposed not the format in general. The lack os support is poor as HEIC is 10bit and ding is 16bit compared to the basic 8 bit for jpg

I have tens of thousands of camera-native or Adobe-converted DNG files and never had an issue in PhotoLab or any other software.

The “bad idea” of DNG is that not enough emphasis was placed on explaining it is a container format, not an image format.

I’ve said before and I will say again, for a lot of years TIFF support was like this. Not all TIFF files are the same thing and not all DNG files are the same thing. Perhaps unsurprising considering one is based on the other. The only reason TIFF is mostly trouble free these days is because all the earlier trouble essentially forced a very limited subset of its capabilities to be used ongoing.

Wait’ll you get into video where the number of containers and codecs is substantially larger and they are highly variable in real world use.

I even think lot of people don’t even know what a container is.

But it doesn’t change that with in that my Samsung phone exports 16bits which would allow a great more editing flexibility.

I agree :

Since PL now loads Iphone images, I think it should load samsung too.

I know several people who gave up taking photos with their iPhone in favor of a Samsung and have no regrets about their choice.

Over the years there have been a steady number of posts on many forums from former PL users who didn’t want to carry on having to use multiple programs if they were using Samsung RAW. I would think these are just the tip of an iceberg of those who more away or probably more who never use the DXO programs lacking Samsung support. I and I suspect most camera users also use phones for much photography. As I get older I will take my cameras less often as its not just my carrying them its my wife having to hang about as I do. The phone gets used in these occasions which probably are the majority now away from our garden.

Out of interest I tried some HEIC files from my phone in case I had missed something and was totally blocked from Samsung. Regrettably Affinity V3 also doesn’t open them, V2 used to so DXO and Canva are suited to each other! Managed to get V3 as well as V2 opening them now so its just DXO with there heads in the sand!

Don’t lose sight of the fact that DxO’s signature technology is based on camera support.

If your camera is not supported, your only options are TIFF or JPEG.

So were all other old processing programs most have had the sense to move with the times!

It’s not quite the same. DxO test/measure the actual cameras and lenses. It’s what they’re known for and is their point of difference. As far as I am aware, the competition just create a simple mathematical model, possibly just based on manufacturer specifications.

The generic support of “any” DNG file is not the same as TIFF (which is really only a subset of that format’s capabilities) or JPEG (which has very little variation). A DNG can (and does) contain all sorts of stuff including multiple RAW or RGB images, depth maps, and more.

In any case, if you want DxO to support your device, use the provided link to request it. Wishcasting in these forums achieves nothing.

The refusal to allow HEIC files isn’t effected by any of that. If I go through the long-winded task of changing my Samsung HEIC files to apple they open no problem. Many of us for years on the four and direct requests have asked to phon support to be ignored and that goes back to before the current PL. Others can do it and if the will was the4re DXO could as well and given phone use far outstrips cameras (flicker has said most images uploaded to then are now from phones) its not just changes that effect me but ones that may make effect how successful DXO remains.

HEIC files from my Samsung S23 ultra work just fine in PL10, so do newer Samsung phones.

I have 3 results from loading them from in the past a 22 and now 26 I either get a warning not supported, images shown and PL locks up (usually needs task manager to close it or even a reboot or the image loads after a very long time. I have reported all 3 to support and am told Samsung isn’t supported so nothing they can/will do. The last time “PhotoLab does not currently support HEIC files from your Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra with a dedicated module, your input helps us assess and prioritize future improvements.”

As a new test I took 3 image’s in the garden, loaded into my test folder with an old image they are shown and after 6 minutes task manager says PL is not active but at least it close PL this time.

I have done the same tests on my laptop with more problems as its less powerful than my tower. As far as I know and experience they never have added Samsung to the improvements list so I’m glad yours open but my ones and other people as I understand it still are not so lucky. I have also opens a new support ticket, last one was last December so may be..

I cant upload them here so there are 2 available to try on Dropbox

Did a test load for support tonight and it actually produced a crash report when doing it. God only knows how anyone else gets them to open in PL!

@John7
I downloaded your photos and they are 120Mp photos. My test photos from my S23 Ultra and another S25 Ultra were all 12Mp photos.

The smaller photos work well in PL10 but the larger photos taka a long time to generate the previews - I did not time them but it was at least a minute or two.

PL10 did not crash and previews did generate for both your photos.

I am guessing that the large size is an issue for PL10.

Suport have come back with Samsung isnt supported and I have changed the phone information to an apple in the past and they loaded OK. (I found that changing a pain!) The Apple phones have moduals that that work in PL 1 or 2 on no matter how new the phone

This Last time produced a crash report as on my PC. Usually on it and laptop it usually just causes them to lock up needing a forced closure. Basically your use of the basic imige size gets round the lack of support. I have tried it and they will load but that’s not DXO intention but luck as it’s an Apple format they say they support not a format in general

They load and work in Affinity and load very fast into Microsoft Camera
