Ah - OK. I still reckon that’s the cause of your issue, tho … because PL has no “ownership” of the source images (they’re not in a folder over which it has any control - or even awareness of) - so it does not allow deletion.

If it only happened in External Selections, I might agree. But it also happens in Folders (which PL5 definitely ‘owns’), so it’s a bigger problem.
Ah - OK.
FWIW: I’ve not seen this problem on my Win installation.
John
I have a similar problem in PL8 (Windows) and before: I use a third party browser (Breezebrowser). When I open a picture in PL8 for RAW processing, I can create a virtual copy in the “Customize mode”. To remove a virtual copy, it seems only possible to go to the “Photolibrary mode”, and browse the folder of the picture and delete the VC. I will launch a new feature request to avoid this work around.
No, that’s not correct - - It’s certainly possible to delete a VC whilst in Customise mode.
You cannot, tho, delete a VC using your third party browser (without also deleting ALL correction details applied to the image).
In my post I said the editing is launched from a third party browser.
If you edit a RAW file with command line (RAW file as an example):
c:\Program Files\DxO\DxO PhotoLab 8>DxO.PhotoLab.exe “D:\My pictures\20240520\P1308714.RW2”
then you will see that you can create virtual copies for the P1308714.RW2, but not delete these VC.
I have no such problem on Mac.
I never tried that. What is it useful for?
@Wolfgang It isn’t but it replicates what programs do when they pass an image to PhotoLab.
I believe that the issue is related to ‘External Selections’ as I discussed here Delete VC in PL8 for pictures opened with another image browser - #4 by BHAYT at some length, hopefully correctly!?
PS:- It is all based around the designation of an external selection so if the field is changed then it becomes a candidate for the same adjustments as a ‘Project’ including ‘Remove’
I vaguely remembered seeing something with “External Selections”, most likely when testing with LR 5.7.
While that’s not my workflow, I played with it and also looked for some other programs.
As @pbar noted, I cannot delete Master and/or VirtualCopy in Customize from the context menu, but only in the Photo Library. – While experimenting that even didn’t work always and I had to restart PL to be able to delete everything. – Hmmm yes, using VCs in “external selections”, that I can also delete, could make experimentation easier.
@BHAYT – your workaround via “Project” helps. Then you just have to remember where the re-exported file belongs.
@Wolfgang Arguably you could work solely between ‘Projects’ and ‘External Selections’ (also a project but with a different designator) and never need to know where the files actually reside but life could get even more complicated than normal!
You could collect all kinds of externally selected items into any number of ‘Projects’ based upon whatever criteria a user chooses.
Sadly you can’t add a description (other than in the name) for what the ‘Project’ contains/was intended to do etc .etc.
PS:- While my statements above are correct, you were referring to any exports because they arguably have no “obvious” home except perhaps a directory created which reflects the name of the ‘Project’.
Well, I think that the “External Selection,” unlike the “Project,” exports back to the correct location (or folder?).
Perhaps you could try it and see if this observation holds true.
@Wolfgang That appears to be the case.
I believe that I once managed to Tag images from more than one directory and send all the tagged images to DxPL but I do not seem to be able to repeat that!
Edit:-
I managed to select images from two directories by setting the Rating = 5 and then searching the directory above for all images in all subfolders where Rating = 5.
I am a little concerned that not all showed the 5 rating but all were opened in PhotoLab and the export put the exported images into a directory of the same name in each of the two subdirectories.
@Wolfgang I had re-used some test images and that meant they were known to the database so I cleared the database, cleaned up the directories and re-ran the test., just to be on the safe side!
Located the data in XnViewMP and set the ‘Rating’ of all images in two directories (“Bill” and “Ben”) to 5.
Found the entries using a search in XnViewMP and sent the combined group of 4 images to PL831
The contents of the database shows the following after this export and has all the data in the ‘Folders’ Table to put the exports in the correct location(the same will be true if all the images are then put in a Project and exported- see further below for the result)
The results after both the “External Selection” and the “Projects” exports are
Edits:- I then deleted both the ‘Projects’ and ‘External Selection’ entries and did a search on 5and got the following result
Because the original entries and both sets of exports are still in the database
The exports do not carry over the “5*” rating of the original is that as it should be !?
@BHAYT – What an effort! Thank you for testing.
.
Experimented again … and replaced the program icons with a 2 / 3 letter shortcut when converting the EXTERNAL SELECTIONS to PROJECTS to remember where to export to
( the different numbers indicate added / deleted VCs in those projects ).
So yes, when exporting from external selections and projects, the target programs opened and displayed the original locations (regardless of disk or partition) from which I had selected the various images for processing in PL. – Great! I wasn’t expecting that.
Here, Lightroom displayed the subfolder in which the selected images were stored.
Since most of my images are (re)named like the corresponding folder:
“YYYY-MM-DD_someDescription” plus the extension “_1234.xyz”, they are easy to find.
.
But then, it’s not my workflow. – I usually copy everything onto my computer, create folders, rename the images accordingly, and then review them in FastPictureViewer to decide whether to keep or delete them … before launching PL.
And since my goal is printing and not social media, I usually do everything else in PS (also have copies of AP and ON1).
