A quick example. As you can see, only with DxO the profile “Generic Rendering / DxO Camera Profile (X30)” is halfway (!) correct. The rest of the DxO results are absolutely wrong.
However, the Lightroom Camera profile “Fuji Pro Neg Hi” fits perfectly.
And here then DxO Generic Rendering Natural or Neutral. I’m sorry, but they also look absolutely terrible, … and for me they have nothing to do with natural or neutral color representation - … and with the film simulation set, nothing at all.
And let’s be honest; I spent quite a lot of money on DxO Photolab, DxO Filmpack and DxO NIK Filter Collection, so I expect the same return that is promised in the advertising - and not a colorful circus far removed from any reality or film simulation.
And even if I create a DCP profile with my x-rite ColorChecker , it is overwritten when I select these unfunny colorful film simulations from the film pack or the Photolab Digital setting. In such a case, Photolab does not even use this DCP profile as a basis …
captain obvious speaking : “proper” red getting magenta-ish (shift to blue) tint is a problem of many color transforms, specifically when they are matrix ( or matrix with minimal attempt at corrections with luts after that ) and matrix was not biased towards making red more precise at the expense ( because when CFA SSFs are not “ideal” [ “Luther-Ives condition” or curves that come close to the desired effect - some people { blog.kasson.com , in turn based on https://www.strollswithmydog.com/perfect-color-filter-array/ } say pure Gaussian curves of certain shape come close ] which is always not for any consumer cameras everything is always at the expense of something ) of blues and greens …
Thank you for taking this up with DxO. Your Adobe examples are a revelation as I’ve struggled with colours, first with my Fuji cameras and now also with Olympus. Garish, overcooked presets have led me down a rabbit hole in attempting to reconstruct likeable results from a ‘neutral’ starting point. I still feel a lack of confidence in getting consistent results despite having used DxO software intensively since Optics Pro 8 (2012).
remember that you also need to experiment with Color Space = Classic (Legacy) and Intensity (under Rendering) slider … it is a monkey’s job , but sometimes people find a combo that suites the taste
Update: DXO support have asked their processing specialists to look into my complaint!
In the meantime, I loaded the raw file into Photoshop CS5 and was amazed that Camera Raw opened. There are a lot of controls there with which I am unfamiliar, and I dont want to have to play around with colour adjustments on every photo I take. With minimal adjustments I was able to make a more acceptable version.
I emphasize that the light that day was strange. What I have achieved in Adobe is to make the red/purple hues less painful on the eyes.
between reds, greens and blues being “right” some people more tolerant / taste → subjective / to blues being magenta-ish or cyan-ish than to reds being magenta-ish or yellow / green-ish … I certainly value reds ( and skin melanins even more than pure reds ) being to my personal taste more than green foliage or blue skies being a bit more tinted
I didnt wish to imply that the Adobe example is perfect, but I dont see a magenta cast on the sky.
Apart from the problem with reds/oranges, which affects only my Leica Q3, and not in all circumstances, I am very happy with PhotoLab and prefer to continue using it. I have never really got on with Photoshop as I find it overkill and have certainly no intention of throwing more money at Adobe and advancing beyond CS5. Perhaps it is intended for those who wish to adjust settings more radically than I do!
About 20 years ago I was hand coding Postscript and was very annoyed with Adobe when they refused to provide me with the toolkit code referred to, but only partially explained in their manual on Posrscript, insisting that I pay to become a developer…
The camera-lens team have opened an investigation into this and will look at improving the Leica Q3’s standard rendering, but say this is likely to take some time (at least until June) to implement.
Sagt DXO etwas zu den 7.6-Verbesserungen in Bezug auf Farben? Gibt es Anzeichen dafür, dass nicht nur die Farbwiedergabe von Fuji, sondern auch von Leica verbessert wurde?
Does DXO say anything about the 7.6 improvements in respect of colours? Is it to be expectesd that not only Fuji colour renderings, but also Leica colour renderings have been improved?
