Hi Peter,
PL 9 has the largest number of new and upgraded features that DxO has ever implemented in a single release . I just threw this together so I am not sure if I missed anything. I will update this list if I have.
-
Removal of sharpening restrictions below 75% zoom for both Lens Sharpness Optimization and the Unsharp mask. We can finally see the results of adding sharpness at any zoom level.
-
Change to viewing Chromatic Aberration corrections from 75% zoom and above to 50% zoom and above.
-
A new Lens Sharpness Optimization algorithm.
-
Ability to apply DeepPRIME in local adjustments.
-
Ability to apply Lens Sharpness Optimization in local adjustments.
-
A live preview option to view global and local DeepPRIME denoising in the editing window while editing.
-
Updates to the DeepPRIME 3 algorithm
-
New AI based masking in local adjustments
-
New local adjustment masking and sub-masking layers.
-
The ability to combine various local masks.
-
The ability to erase and shape control line and control point masks
-
The ability to set the diffusion of control point mask edges.
-
A major upgrade to the functionality and usability of the local adjustment Auto brush which now respects object selection borders.
-
Removal of PRIME noise reduction. Perhaps a problem for some people but it helps save space in the interface.
-
New filmstrip stacking features, including the stacking of virtual copies as well as separate image files.
-
New advanced batch renaming functionality.
-
New exported file renaming in the export dialog.
-
New project creation features
-
Pro RAW support
-
HEIF/HEIC support
-
Using last image previewed after restart (thanks to @Wlodek )

Yep, Forgot about that. However, I do wish that was an option in Preferences. I will add it to my previous post.

Yes, @andras.csore it is absolutely so that we need both these different AI-ways to add masks and I gave already stessed that fact. It is only by using the AI-preset we can automate AI-masks by either copy-paste or using them in our own tailormade AI-presets. Capture One has had that for years and it is crry powerful so I hope DXO will sort that problem soon.
Only for Apple and some supported cameras I found when originally dering this support nut found the limits
I’m not suggesting that every feature added or updated in PL9 is perfect, finished, or meets everyone’s expectations. I was just pointing out the functionality new to PL 9.
Mark
It took me by surprise as I saw this support but didn’t find out the many restrictions. I fact support thought as I did the formats were now supported
Point 1. We asked for that for years.
So they finaly rewrote the viewing engine.
Together with the CA correction good upgrade.
Optical Lens module. Or only the lens sharpening? Thus the re-indexing of the lab results of all lens testing?
There optic module’s where already good so do you see any change?
Deep prime preview great! That’s also a long asked feature of me.
The local apply of deep prime? As i wrote above can’t see the importantie.
Prime was always in the plus versions a kind of smart applying where it is needed.
Local masking features nice.
Auto brush pfffff how long where we asking for this? The knibble around was teddius work. It seems that it was a lot of work to get those things right same as the viewingengine.
It could be triggering me to upgrade but my dutch mind says first use v8 for a wile see if its good enough.
And let the quirks filtered out.
V10 should then be my target.

Hey Peter,
Once you’ve re-familiarized yourself with PL 8 you could always download the 30-day free trial of PL 9 to see whether an upgrade is worthwhile for you.
Mark
Its funny. One person’s “nothing” is another person’s “best upgrade ever”. I find the AI masking to be generally useful, though more by clicking on parts of the image rather than using the “Sky/Subject/Background” dropdown items. And then there is the Auto Brush which went from being a pain in the ass to the single best selection tool in the Local Adjustments palette. There is no edit that I can make now that I couldn’t make before but the ease of use dropped my editing time from substantial to quick.
Credit where it’s due, the AutoBrush is a fantastic change for the better and the AI masking by clicking on random bits of the image generally is accurate, though not necessarily fast.
But I do feel v9.0 needs a lot more work to get it to universally “good”. It feels rushed.
Uh…If you always wait 2 months, you’ll always have the full year of investment – no loss of the money invested.
Effectively what happens when you schedule updates for Black Friday.
I’m sorry Mark, the thread creator already explained to all of us that this update is useless, so I’m afraid your personal opinion doesn’t count.
Sorry for jumping into this thread after reading the last days comments. Yes, there are bugs. And yes, some people have big problems with the new AI feature. But please be aware that many more do not have any problems with it and it works perfectly for them. So calm down and wait for bug fixing. When we buy a brand new version we have to expect more bugs than normally. This is of course not satisfactory but reality.
So far I must be one of the lucky ones as everything I’ve thrown at it just seems to work and as my free trial has finished I have purchased it and not bothered to wait until Black Friday, that I usually do. So any gains they make compared to the pricing of black Friday. I think they deserve it this time.
My system is using an I9, 12900 with 32 GB of memory and an AMD 16800 with 16 GB of memory. Whether that makes any difference, I do not know.
But please be aware that many more do not have any problems with it and it works perfectly for them.
Good for them?
Plenty of people eat at McDonald’s without getting food poisoning. When you have food poisoning, you don’t really want to hear about those people, or how “an occasional problem is bound to be expected”.
Thank you so much for your really helpful comparision. It helps everyone who reads it and will help those who have problems with the AI bugs as well as those who have no problems.
You’re welcome. I thought I’d match the incredible helpfulness that is telling people who are having problems “lots of people aren’t having problems”.
I have to laugh, as your last and only posts here were in 2023… complaining about having problems.
(Edit: Also, we’re now over a month since release with no signs of an update, let alone a fix).
