PL installation structure curiosity: "Web" folder

I was curious about the (sub)folder named “Web” that appears in the list of folders created within the installation structure of PL (8, in this case) … See above.

So, I renamed it to see what might happen when I started PL - - The answer being “nothing”; PL runs just fine without this folder.

  • Interestingly; it contains quite a few files dated the last time I ran PL (from before I renamed this folder) … So, obviously, in some cases it’s contents are updated

  • Any thoughts on the point/purpose of this folder ?

PS. Don’t be confused by the “DCPs-&-LUTs” folder … that’s my creation.

Edit: Mystery solved;

@John-M I am not sure what it is for but checking my own installations it has been there since PL5, i.e. PL5, PL6, PL7 & PL8 but not PL2, PL3 & PL4

and its size varies between my System 1 (5900X) and System 2 (i7-4790K), typically bigger on System 2 (i7) but PL8 is not installed on that machine.

@John-M, @BHAYT

yes – since PL5 (and no idea what it is for) :man_shrugging:

These files are probably installed by Microsoft’s embedded browser WebView SDK. See Introduction to Microsoft Edge WebView2 - Microsoft Edge Developer documentation | Microsoft Learn and Manage user data folders - Microsoft Edge Developer documentation | Microsoft Learn :

The Microsoft Edge WebView2 control allows you to embed web technologies
(HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) in your native apps.
The WebView2 control uses Microsoft Edge as the rendering engine
to display the web content in native apps.

I guess DxO uses WebView for things like activation, Help->DxO Hub, TimeMachine, update screen, etc. Better don’t touch it :slight_smile:

Yes - given the names of folders within this folder, that sounds likely.

I’ll leave it renamed for now - and will see what happens … I’ll report back with findings.

If you have FilmPack then try clicking on the Time Machine button, I think you’ll find that either nothing happens or PL will create a new ‘web’ folder.

Yep, you’re correct - PL creates a new “Web” folder if one does not already exist.

I found this folder is also used/created when “DxO Hub” is activated - such as when an update is detected

Thought it might, based on what I discovered / explained in this topic:
