I guess that might be right but still I don’t really understand why I have managed to downgrade despite the system warned me that should not be possible.
I try to look a bright side:
- Seems the issues is related with ‘keyword AI mask’ cases (like: sky, subject, etc.). At least as i read thru the comments. Not good, not good, but at least we see. Seems its may takes far more GPU VRAM (peak usage) what was ‘ever expected’. Note: i guess (pretty sure) export issues also related with ‘keyword masks’.
- As i try manual masks (area, selection, autobrush) works fine and seems more responsible/fluid on mask ‘selection’ performance - note: mask selection performance and may not mask rendering performance.
- I not read too much about masking quality in the comments. Not for manual masking and not for ‘keyword AI mask’ cases (like: sky, subject, etc.).
As i try manual masking works fine. May (?) give a bit different results in few cases (bird stuff) and may better results on some cases like ropes. Also seems (?) matting seems a bit different. But at overall its fine. - Mask management added. Frankly i was wondered, how its not added in 9.0 base release, as its the very basic function (i think its also a sign the release was ‘rushed’).
At least as i read thru the comments, may i miss something, let me know.
Regarding AI mask quality: someone with previous threads like birds and i remember some family photo (3 people) with some ‘ghostly’ mask behind them. What up now with release 9.2? What about ‘sky’? As i try seems ‘sky’ behaviour is changed.
It seems that PL 9.2 made a backup of PL 9.1 databse before creating new DB version, at least in my case. The rest of magic is probably a result of a bug/feature (like false alarm)
If it works, don’t ask why ![]()
@andras.csore compared with other packages PL9 Sky preset or sky selection are both “rubbish”! PL9 cannot detect sky through the minarets on the Royal Pavilion image and other products can. A number of products have trouble with the trees in that image but the worst of the lot is PL9.
It had an opportunity to surpass the other products instead it is trailing way behind!!
I just repeated the Pavilion test with the 581.80 drivers on my 3060(12GB) which are Games Ready drivers
and it failed!
Always 2 adjacent images failing but the position in the “list” has changed, it always used to be the first 2 images and now they are occurring at different locations!!
As one of IBM consultants said about a certain feature in their software, “If it doesn’t work, don’t use it”. The topic of predefined AI masks usability has already been beaten to death here. The Selection and Area modes do work, and are mostly superior to the predefined ones.
Why worry about AI Sky mask, just use what @Joanna uses for years, e.g. see PL 9.2 interesting AI idea of what a sky looks like 😀 .
BTW, often you can get a “better” sky just by going down with Selective Tones → Highlights (and pushing Midtones higher to get a balance). Another standard trick is to use Saturation=-15 and Vibrance=+40 – actual settings can be found in one of the DxO Landscape presets, iirc. Both solutions are quick and dirty but often work. You may tune that by using HSL.
On windows the history is NOT stored in the DOP files like on Mac, only in the database.
@andras.csore
I think version 9.2 even got worse despite in general nothing has really changed for the better when it comes to performance and the problems known with what you call the “keyword AI-masks”. I definitely felt performance degraded in my machine even with manual masking at exports. That was why I decided to uninstall version 9.2.
I don´t want to Beta-test anymore if I can avoid it. Using the manual method works fine in version 9.1 and I will stay there until I get my new computer in a week or so.
I have also installed the 581.80 driver and it works fine with manual masking.
It is a difference with consultants In the nineties they used to say about a consultant friendly business strategy:
“We fix one problem and create two new ones at the same time” (“Vi fixar ett problem och skapar två nya p samma gång” (in Swedish)) . That way we never will run out of jobs!
@Wlodek Please don’t ever quote IBM to me, I worked for Burroughs/Unisys for 36 years and did a lot of pre-sales work in the early part of my career and came up against IBM and basically the quote was “no-one ever got fired for buying IBM” even though their database product was not even vaguely close to DMS II.
With respect to my use of the Sky preset it is simple, it is easy to apply and it breaks the software, it is as simple as that. When PL9 is able to handle whatever I throw at it then it is “fit for purpose”, with the caveat that the implementation of both the Sky preset and the sky selection leave a lot to be desired.
So step 1 get it working so that it doesn’t just fall over! I just opened PL9 on the 3060((12gb) and it opened on the [M]aster of the Brighton Pavilion images with the internal error displaying and the screen frozen and then just passed away all on its own!? I have just restarted it and it seems fine so far.
Step 2 improve the SKY selection so that Minarets (openings) are included and trees and gaps between plants are handled successfully. ON1 isn’t perfect, it gets the minarets and is fine around the branches and gets a lot of the sky peaking through a large tree in another image I used but misses a few of the smaller sky patches.
When/if DxO ever get to that point then its AI masking will have “come of age” as far as I am concerned but first they have got to get it to a point where it isn’t consuming most of the VRAM and doesn’t fall over at all.
There was a risk that I was being unfair with my tests using images that had been edited on the previous release. So I created a new directory with the original image outside PL9 and discovered the image, made 19 VCs and added a sky selection to the images, not a Sky preset. Set the LA to highlights = - 88 and ClearvIew = 50 and exported and the results looked good until VC16 and then I got my infamous 2 errors.
Given that the whole exercise was undertaken in PL9.2 including the export the VRAM usage was 9683MB of my 3060(12GB) using Games Ready 581.80 (the Studio drivers do not appear to be available yet).
But still with errors so I will submit a support request today!
PS:- The values I have chosen are to highlight the parts of the sky that PL9 AI discovers and the parts it doesn’t. The following includes a user sky selection and a Sky preset selection.
Yep. ‘Sky’ still not so great…
Anyhow, as i see, the ‘Sky’ in PL 9.2 it’s behave a bit differently than previous releases, example:

PL 9.2
Good old Brighton Pavilion!
One good thing with 9 is on my laptop it actually is much faster loading. Did a test after rebooting and the latest 8 took 2min 12sec to open and 9.2 1min 28sec
I think the slowness is they check, I understand , drives linked to the PC and my NAS is has a link on the laptop
Be very usfull if DXO would allow user to be able to select where the program looked. Though my wi fi is fast the ethernet on the desk clearly workes doing this much faster and they open faster on it even though the PC has some 3 or 4 linked drives more thsn the laptop
As outlined in this thread
I have PL9.1 running without issues on my Graphics computer. I installed 9.2 and it crashes just like others have reported.
While editing a new batch of photos, I encountered error messages when using the AI masks.
So, I re-exported previously processed images that had no issues with 9.1 and half of them failed with 9.2. I found that, without doing anything, I could re-export the failed ones again and, most but not all exported on the second try.
However, the failures are inconsistent. One set of three almost identical images - where I copied the first settings onto the other two, the first image consistently failed. Whereas, the other two had no issues.
So, I am back to 9.1 which is a pity as I liked the “new” save history --which is Finally working after how many years??
Updated to 9.2, but not updated driver to 581.80. I think PL9 running quicker and smoother. Keyword AI masking still works OK, but saving an image with AI mask and noise removal takes around a minute to happen. Not tried with none AI keyword masks yet.
A good approach would be for those 2 sections to be initially presented as collapsed - to reduce the need for vertical scrolling.
Absolutely agreed! Or have them expand sideways out of a single menu item “Stars” or “Colours”?
Either way; having them take up less screen estate would be welcome.
I’m still patiently waiting for support for Sigma 500mm F5.6 on L-mount. The lens release is coming up on 2 years and my support requests have gone unanswered.
Did you noticed the thread title?
I had the same problems with the automatic AI masks. With the Radeon RX 6650 XT, the export ran into the graphics card’s memory overflow.
Today, I borrowed an RX 9070 OC (without XT) with 16 GB. With this graphics card, I was able to apply 3 AI masks (animal, background; person/face) at the same time, and the export went through. 30 images in 1 minute 50 seconds.
The usage was 15 GB of VRAM.
