PhotoLab 9.2 out

NEW IN DXO PHOTOLAB 9.2

  • New features
    • Improved AI Masks:- AI Masks become even more powerful thanks to improved matting and an upgraded sensibility threshold for cleaner, more accurate edges around complex subjects. The result is an AI masking system that feels smarter, faster, and more intuitive than ever.
    • Persistent correction history:- Advanced History now remains available between sessions, allowing you to keep track of your edits even after closing PhotoLab. By default, the last 50 actions are saved (up to 250, configurable in Preferences).
    • Improved mask management:- You can now drag and drop sub-masks within a mask or between masks in the Local Adjustments palette. Hold a modifier key to copy instead of moving and optionally reorder masks the same way.
    • Improved sub-mask naming:- Duplicated sub-masks now keep the original name and add a localized “copy” with an incremental number. Newly created sub-masks are automatically named “Sub mask 1, 2, 3…” (instead of “New”), and any custom name you assign is preserved when adding a geometry.
    • New image filters:- Added filters to quickly display images with corrections, with local corrections, or unedited images.
  • New supported cameras
    • Nikon ZR
    • Ricoh GRIV
  • Bug fixes
    • Prevented PhotoLab from crashing when using the Reshape tool in rare cases where distortion prevents projection.

• Minor bug fixes and improvements*
With each update, please be sure to also update your GPU’s driver for the best experience and to avoid any issues*

I’m only on the PL9 trial but this update has been offered to me. It’s downloading as I type…

I like the image filter change, but it would be nice to be able to hide (or minimise, or change the behaviour of) some filters so that we can hide what we’re not using.

For example, I never use the Star system, so hiding it means I have a lot less to scroll through. Or if you never use the colour labels… same thing.

Just installed it. At the moment of writing, it’s working on developing a photo with predefined masks using DeepPrime XD, which has been impossible before. Let’s see how that works out! (I’m using an RTX 2060 with 6GB)

Update it to what… AFAIK some are having problems with the latest drivers and AI masking? No sign of that being addressed.

That said they claim a performance increase and a slicker masking experience. Fingers crossed!

It worked, no issues so far!

Masking seems a bit softer (? more feather?) and a bit better (??? or may not) on the edges on Bird photo (‘Area selection’, and NOT ‘Animal’).

I’ve only poked at one photo so far with 9.2, but it exported without any problems on my Win 11 laptop (Core i7 CPU, 16GB RAM) + RTX 4050 (6GB VRAM). I may yet be persuaded to upgrade from PL7…

AI masking seems quite fast initially, but having added a a range of several types of mask I’m finding slowdown still - especially in the usual “Full preview in progress…”

That said, AI masking does work for me, as does exporting, as it has since build 9.1 along with the latest nVidia drivers.

In some cases exporting seems incredibly slow. I just tried a new image from scratch and one image export was ~46 seconds where previously in PL8 I could export in under 15 seconds per image.

I’m assuming AI masking is the key here, as I was using it heavily in this export.

My advice to those tinkering with masking is to always disable your masking if you’re tweaking other things and not actively working on it. PL9 speeds back up again if it doesn’t have to render masks…!

AI mask - manual ‘Selection’ mode performance seems faster/better. Quality is hard to say yet, but seems better (? or at least ‘finding’, i not check the edges). ‘Show mask’ performance seems better. In my observations.

I still have export errors when using predefined masks… I9-285 32GB RTX4070 notebook.

9.2 still needs the GPU memory for most laptop users that are over the top. On my desk PC some tests using large flowers found it was quicker and nearly as accurate to use 4 control points than AI flowers. Oddly however exporting was 20 sec for those with AI but 35 Sec for Control Points. But returning to try a selection one with AI had PL 9.2 crash with the usual error.
Rebooted PL and the AI flower was flickering between parts of the flower and background as I moved the mouse. Put PC into sleep and made a new virtual copy and reset before AI which couldn’t find the flower and crashed again.
Rebooted PC ran tested again and still problems.
Rebooted and deleted database. AI selected flowers and exported. The original images had Control Points and once PL was corrupted and couldn’t be cleared. There may well be improvements in 9.2 but still a lot of big problems.

I fully agree.
AI-masking with pre- defined mask sets runs in PL 9.2 a little bit smoother and faster but still causes crashes during export. Graphics memory (8GB, RTX 3070) is fully occupied and will not be released unless I shut down and restart PL.
It seems there is still a lot of work to do for DxO. Are they carefully testing before releasing a new version of PL ? How much VRAM is really needed in the end ? 12 GB, 16GB, … ?
The published minimum hardware requirements for a Windows PC are obviously not realistic.

I, of course, agree.

It’s great that they’ve sprung v9.2 on us here and are still innovating and refining on the product. That’s praise they deserve.

But we had no word this was coming, and the big issue seems to still be around performance across the whole product (but made significantly worse when AI is introduced).

Are they reading all this? Is it acknowledged?

It’s easier to be patient when you feel you’ve been heard and understood.

Interesting!

Catch 22 situation here - cannot install because installation directory is not empty.

@Fineus Do you expect the leopard to suddenly change its spots.

My favourite bug is still there but with a slight variant!

When I run a series of tests changing between DP3 and XD2s PL9 almost always falls over with the first two images getting an export error but today after some simple exports changing between the two NR algorithms I ran a test with my “favourite” image of Brighton Pavilion and now I get 4 and in different places !!?

@Stenis I have had that in the past and you need to make sure nothing that might have any file open in the directory is closed and delete one or other of the offending files manually, sadly I cannot remember which!

Yes I can, whatever is left in the directories after an uninstall!

After all these years the history now survives a close and re-open on Win 10. Please note the above tests was done with my 3060(12GB) and, as usual, PL9 expands to use almost all the memory.

It may be interesting that the following appears in corresponding PL7.18 and PL8.10 but not in PL9.2 release notes (Windows):

Fixed display glitches in the image preview when using OpenCL or AI Acceleration on NVIDIA RTX 50-series GPUs.
