Thanks for your advice.
Time Out: Is it really that important to move all of the database information when you move your photos to another drive? I always move my files to an external drive after editing with PhotoLab and it’s never been a problem.
Could we perhaps be over-thinking this?
That depends on what you expect.
- lose nothing (no edits, history, metadata, projects etc.)
→ copy the database - accept some loss (loss depending on whether you use Mac or Win)
→ no need to copy the database
The question is really why anything should be moved at all. If one just wants to unload the files from the PC, moving files is good enough. If one wants to use the files on a new or secondary computer, adding a copy of the database (by using PL’s DB backup menu item) is the smart move.
My reason for moving files from internal to external is because internal storage is faster, so I copy the contents of the card to internal and then do all of my editing from the faster internal drive. When I’m done, I move everyone to my external Thunderbolt drive and back that up to my NAS.
I will look for the menu item you mention but so far, moving the RAW and DOP files always works and I have not noticed anything missing. But I do not mean you’re wrong, only that I haven’t noticed anything missing.
No offence taken, and in your case, you do all you need to do.
As for backing up the database, the user guide should have all the necessary info ![]()
