DXO10 Performance

Are there any first hints/impressions on performance and stability available in the community e.g. compared to DXO9? Esp. on Windows.

There are many posts on the performance and stability of PL 10 on this site. All you need to do is look.

As someone with an older system (yet one that has no problem with other software/games):

  • At launch, PL9 ran like crap for me. I had lots of problems with performance and stability; it took time for these to be resolved. I think I was far from alone in this.
  • By comparison, PL10 seems much more stable and comparable with most recent PL9 builds for performance EXCEPT in DeepPrime XD3 exports.
  • In PL9 I can make XD3 exports in around 20-30 seconds (again, my system is a little older, for others this is much faster).
  • HOWEVER in PL10 an XD3 export takes at least 2.5 minutes (!) I’ve tried multiple experiments with different photos, single, and batch exports.

I’d strongly suggest trying to the PL10 trial (free and fully functional for 30 days) to see how you get on.

It seems as fast as PL9 for me. Approx 10s for a Nikon Z8 NEF file. I9/RTX4070-8GB system.

I hadn’t updated from PL8 to 9 because my computer was too slow for the PL9 trial version (no dedicated graphics card, AMD Ryzen 7 5700U with Radeon Graphics):

AI masks didn’t work, the export process was unstable, and it took a really long time.
Without a dedicated graphics card, I was used to it taking a long time: a 45MB RAW image takes about 2 to 3 minutes with XD2.

The penultimate update to PL8 (shortly before the release of PL10) brought a significant improvement in export speed, even on my computer. So I tested PL10 and was pleasantly surprised.

The AI masks work well on my system (after loadingā€”ā€œā€¦ Full Preview in Progress,ā€ which sometimes takes a little while—the AI masks run completely smoothly).
Exporting with XD3 takes just as long as with PL8, which is perfectly fine for this system.

After the positive test, I bought PL10, and even on my underpowered system, I’ve noticed a significant improvement over PL8. PL10 runs more smoothly, and all features work fine.

I see one review on Youtube - comparing ā€˜UI response’ / ā€˜calculation’ of PL8 vs 9 vs 10 (under Mac) with Rotating graduate filter → v8 was fast, v9 was slower than v8, v10 may even a bit faster than v8. I forget where i see :frowning: He record the screen with phone. It was a good review (honest)
I find it: Andy Hutchinson - DXO Photolab 10 - In-Depth Review - Masks All The Way Down
YT Video link below, i set the start for this test:

Look where please? There are many different items where none is dedicated to performance at least some hours ago.

Thank you, will do. E.g. a Deepprime xd3 export allready takes about 4 minutes on my system (laptop, no graphiccard)

I never said there was a specific thread but there are many individual posts on a number of threads on this site expressing general observations regarding the performance and stability of the PL 10 release, and some of them make comparisons of it with PL 9. If you are hoping to see an in depth comparison here, that you will not find, However there are a number of video reviews available on the internet which may serve that purpose for you. Generally the response to the release of PL 10 on this site has been much more positive then negative although some people have indicated they are having issues with it.

I have been on this site since PL 1 was released in 2017. From my perspective, PL 10 is one of the most stable version of PhotoLab at time of release that I have seen in years. The performance on my older hardware is quite good and PL 10 does not suffer from the many issues that plagued PL 9 when it was first released. Some of us have noticed, myself included, that performance regarding the AI features has noticeably improved compared to PL 9.

It is not perfect of course, as no new software release is. I suspect that point updates will be released over the coming months to address issues that some users have indicated they are seeing.

Depending on you hardware environment, especially the graphics card and your use cases, your experience may differ. As always download the free 30 day trial and spend the time to ensure it meets your expectations before purchasing a license.

Without a graphics card exports using XD3 will be very slow as you discovered and could be very problematic especially with AI masks applied to the image. You may run into internal errors resulting in failed exports.

Sounds good, thank you very much! Cheers.

Thanks Mark, will do. But got some positive signals on PL10.

Cheers

I’ll go further than @mwsilvers suggestion to run the PL10 trail and say it is essential that you do that. It’s the only way to be sure your system can cope with PL10.

I have PL9 and am trialling PL10 - using MacBook Pro M4 with 24GB RAM - HQ previews and Prime previews switched off - using auto select neural engine setting - performance was the reason I prefer LRC over PL9 especially with masks - performance remains rubbish in PL10 as well - image blurs when making adjustments and adjustment lags making the editing experience poor at best - worsens with masks - they still can’t get this right.

Because you turned off high quality previews!

Are they talking about what happens while it generates another ā€œhigh quality previewā€?

This step seems mandatory and slow. I always had the impression that ā€œhigh quality previewsā€ just meant the same step but generating an even higher quality preview?

I’m on a Mac with M1 and 16GB RAM, HQ previews on (this must be on, otherwise you see the mentioned blurs!). I agree that performance leaves a bit to be desired, for example there is quite a delay when switching from one image to another.

I didn’t realise that - will give that a try thanks - probably my main complaint.

The poor performance with AI masks and Deepprime XD3 without a dedicated GPU is to be expected in my view.

On my system 6 Core Xeon(R) W-2133 CPU, 32 GB RAM, RTX 3060 12GB VRAM, it takes with PL 9.12 for a 36 MPix RAW file with ISO 800 with DeepPrime XD3 about 24 seconds for an export as JPG and Tiff16.

A second export of the same image with an additional 2 AI masks for highlighting several flowering plants in the garden only took 16 seconds.

GPU load was about 80% and about 5 GB of VRAM was used.

I will repeat the test with the trial version PL10 and then tell you here.

I can confirm - performance of PL10 trail running on Mac mini m4pro/24GB RAM - is close to be disappointing. AI masking (especially image analysis for predefined masks) and local adjustments are really slow and changes on sliders are appearing with a significant delay.
I’m not sure the upgrade to PL10 is worth the disappointing performance.
