DxO 9.2.1 + Manual AI mask + DP3 NR Export can work even with 4GB GPU VRAM!

Yes. Its possible. With 4GB VRAM! Wowww. Of course some workaround needed, but easy. I think, its may can be a good news for example Notebook users with 4GB GPU VRAM (even minimum specifications say 6GB GPU VRAM)- Also, may can helps out issues in the case of 6GB GPU VRAM, etc.

First of all, i like to say thanks to @irekz, for his post: DxO 9.2.1 running out of VRAM - tip that works for me. Basically i describe more-or-less the same - but i test with 4GB GPU VRAM, etc.

If you use AI ‘Manual’ masks and also want to Export with some DP, some cases the ugly ‘Internal error’ come up in various points. Usually it seems happen more often with 6-8GB GPU VRAM amount. I think we already talk a tons about that.

The followings works (tested) only with DP3 NR, and ‘Manual’ AI Masks. OpenCL enabled. But no loupe, no Deepprimerendering, Paralel export: 1, no DP XD2s. Photos 20MPx Oly RAW, basic adjustment added for all photos, for some also simple ‘Manual’ AI mask added, for some also some CP, etc… GPU 4GB VRAM (very old AMD). I test like 15+ times.

See the steps:

  1. Close all other apps as possible (to minimize GPU VRAM usage as possible)
  2. Click on the first (1st) photo. Be ensure this photo don’t has any AI mask.
  3. Seems good idea to set NR to Standard or DP3 in the first (1st) photo
  4. Quit from PL.
  5. Open PL. Its opened with the first (1st) photo.
  6. Select also the other photos you want to export (shift or Ctrl+A, etc.). Dont open any of the others, just stay on the first (1st)
  7. Click Export.
  8. Dont do anything else in PL. No editing, etc. Just wait. (and may also not open other apps)
  9. Export runs fine (no internal error). At least works fine during my limited tests.
  10. Quit from PL.

If you use DP XD2s on the 1st photo (or any of them) or the first (1st) photo has any AI mas → "internal error’ come up (as i test). Editing other photos during export may not the best idea, or even click to another photo… (as i test).

Please note:

  • I test it in my system, my photos, etc. I tested with multiple times with 2 - 3 - 5 - 10 - 19 photo exporteds in one batch.
  • DopCor kill may helps some cases.
  • May other constellations/cases possible.
  • Its in ‘GPU mode’. Of course, in ‘CPU only’ mode everything expected to work (at least if you has 32GB of system memory).

First (1st)

But of curse, this on also can be ‘first’

If someone out there has like 4GB VRAM GPU - like notebook - i think worth to try , and feedback also can great.

I guess, the reason why its works is about: ‘who reserve’ GPU VRAM ‘first’. If the ‘AI Mask model’ reserve (loaded) first, then seems not enough remain for DP3 Export process. If Export initiated first, then later loaded ‘AI Mask model’ (eg. AI not in the 1st photo) does some more lean/precise VRAM usage.
Edit: i have a better idea to reason/explain: The ‘Mask AI model’ when you use in PL in editing is simpler ‘bigger’ the what used in Export! May like in PL editing its use ‘2’ for editing: one for the ‘quick’ show the expected mask, and another (or different AI prompt) for ‘exact/detailed’ mask. And Export use only the ‘exact/detailed’ mask.

Any feedback welcome.

If the goal is to use an image with few adjustments then why not create a small ‘dummy’ image with no adjustments and put that image at the top of EVERY folder, by always selecting that image (and adding to the export list) then you should get the maximum benefit each time.

Great news! Until DxO fixes the problem properly, we have a viable workaround. And DxO gets to make more Black Friday sales. (I was on the fence, but now think I will go ahead and buy.)

Great idea! I the screenshot i use ‘!Dummy_for_Export’ for 1st.

Please try it. Seems working, but more experience give more affirmation!
