does anybody have any information about wether Deep Prime 3 (now that it’ll soon available in Pure Raw 5) will be available as an update in Photolab 8 or not?!
Due to a system change I need a new RAW development tool but having to upgrade again later this year (just for the new denoising) is really not what I’m looking for. Will there be something similar to the current PureRaw upgrade, like “preorder Photolab 9, use Photolab 8 until release and you are later allowed to upgrade to Version 10 and 11 for the lower upgrade price .” ?
I assume nobody might know but maybe anybode has heard or read anything?!
"Additionally, we are unveiling a technology preview of DeepPRIME XD3 X-Trans (beta), bringing our most advanced noise reduction technology to X-Trans sensors for the first time.
Both innovations will be available in the upcoming DxO PureRAW 5 and will soon be integrated into DxO PhotoLab as a free upgrade."
Thank you, so I we can hope upgraded noise reduction might come as a free update to PL8 (but I’m not sure this might really happen … xD - don’t get me wrong, the current tools are - in my opinion - still the best on the market. I’m just trying to figure out if I’ll go with DXO again, C1 or stay with LR - which I’d really like to avoid)
Yeah, +1 here …
I’m using Lightroom and Topaz for my job (don’t like them), in the Studio we use C1, which I’ve always liked very much but it does not deliver as good results as PL8 in terms of noise reduction and lens optimization (my opinion) but overall PL8 doesn’t seem as professional as LR or C1 to me … but it’s still my preference but the price … hard decisions to make… xD (+ I wanted to upgrade to PL7 from PL4 last year and I’m still a “little upset” I have to buy a completely new full price license. That might be the main reason that’s holding me back from spending my money for DXO)
ABOUT THE TOPIC:
I’ve parallel written to the support (about Deep Prime 3 in PL8), that’s what they replied yesterday: “… Given that PhotoLab 8 has been available for quite some time now, I wouldn’t necessarily expect the new denoising method to be available in this version of PhotoLab …”
Yeah but the official press release promises something different and the support says „I don‘t know…“. So there are currently many official sources telling completely different things. Leads me to stick with LR for the time being…
Publications from unofficial sources and historical experience are two different things. So far, new technologies have been arriving in PhotoLab late (in the next major version of PhotoLab). I was very happy to hear that this time it might be different. But let’s be smarter. This is very unlikely to happen. PureRAW is late this year compared to previous years… and it will be late more. And this means that the development time for PhotoLab 9 will be shortened. And here comes the logical conclusion that the new noise reduction will remain for PhotoLab 9 and most likely this will be the main improvement in PhotoLab9. Yes, I don’t like DXO policy. But sometimes we have to accept things we don’t like. Such is life…
PureRAW 5 is expected to be available on April 15th (published on DXO website). The only reason for this delay could be that the software is not yet ready. In such a situation, the efforts of each software company would be focused on finalizing the delayed software. Traditionally, the new version of PureRAW is released at the end of February and is a source of increased financial income after the announcement. The pre-order of PureRAW 5 is aimed at obtaining financial income at this very moment. If DXO had enough finances, they would not announce such a pre-order. I expect PhotoLab 9 to be presented in the last days of September, like last year. And we come to the logical question: In 5 months, what revolutionary development of PhotoLab is DXO capable of? (because most veterans in this forum already imagine the picture from Venice and the message “Something revolutionary is coming…”). Because in September DXO will need our money again, and for that they have to offer something that justifies 100-130 euros for an update.
Of course, if DXO decides to change their policies, I will only be happy. But I prefer not to be in expectation, so as not to be disappointed after the reality does not match my expectations.
Thank you for sharing the document. I would be happy if DXO keeps their promise.
Well, as mentioned before even the support does not really believe that it‘s gonna happen…
But honestly, how and why should/could you support a company that seems to regularly promises feature updates they don’t release (lies to its customers) and has a really customer unfriendly update policy…
I don’t want to believe that they are really risking that huge image loss.
I don’t know about anyone else, but I buy a product if its current feature set is attractive to me, not according to promises. In other words, I support myself not the company, and will enter into a licensing agreement with the company if it’s the best way to support my interests and there aren’t any serious moral objections (namely, material cooperation with evil). I choose DxO despite their problems because I think the PhotoLab suite is the best choice for me, because I can afford it, and because the alternatives aren’t appealing to me. I love not having to constantly upgrade it, but will do so if I like what I’m getting.
Perhaps a concern here is that none of what I just said gives DxO much incentive to do better or be better. For that I employ the power of the pen. I know that they listen and have even found a few good listeners and communicators among the DxO staff. But ultimately my happiness doesn’t depend on DxO or on some utopian future that isn’t going to happen - it depends on my knowing the choices available to me and trying to live the present moment well. If an Adobe subscription or some workflow with other software becomes more appealing, I’ll leave DxO - I’m not married as a customer. However, the grass isn’t always greener someplace else.
True but promising features and not delivering is never good for a company…
Update about what the support says:
„… apparently I was just out of the loop with regard to this! I’ve been advised that the press release is correct, so it seems we should expect the new DeepPRIME 3 to be added to PhotoLab 8 within a few weeks.„
For me, the interesting part of DeepPRIME v3 is in this statement from the CP+ press release:
DeepPRIME 3 incorporates a third process:
the simultaneous correction of residual lateral and longitudinal chromatic aberrations
If the new tech can indeed correct (remove) longitudinal CA, we’d have a correction that is hard to do and that most other apps don’t tackle as far as I know.
But so far, it’s in a press release with all its superlative adjectives only.
Let’s wait and see what the updates/upgrades will bring.
Yes, with false color in fine detail being a significant problem with DeepPRIME XD2s, DxO has wanted to improve the demosaic process further. Hopefully, DeepPRIME 3 will fix that problem and more. And if CA correction in general becomes better, way to go DxO!
