Yes, that’s right.
Back when I was using a Nikon D700, I did not yet own PhotoLab (or its predecessor). For this review, I tried a sharpness comparison with version PL9.10.0.736 and examined additional images (it was the first time these old shots had been processed in PL).
And yes, the difference in sharpness with and without lens sharpness optimization (including CA correction) is much more pronounced
- with the AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G IF-ED
- than with the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2,8 G ED
Btw, I made sure to check images that were really in-focus, which wasn’t always the case at the time. It was only much later that I fine-tuned the AF settings on my (then) DSLRs. These lenses, too, are long gone.

I’d be happy if they did a deep dive on some lenses that haven’t made it into the modules yet, particularly the Samyang/Rokinon 135mm F2.0 Full Frame Telephoto and Samyang/Rokinon AF 14mm in F Mount. They’re both still available and the 135mm is popular for astrophotography and the 14mm is pretty much the best autofocusing 14mm lens available for F mount now that the SIgma 14mm 1.8 has been discontinued. There are modules for the 14mm for both Canon EF and Canon RF, A big chunk of F mount modules would mean a lot more to me than AI stuff I’ll never use.
They have to come with some really compelling new features or massive performance boost (less sluggish) to make me upgrade from 9. I skipped 7, got 8 and 9, but might skip again. 9 is pretty solid now on my baseline Mac Mini M4 Pro.
I expect the depth mask to make it to PL from Nik. I also expect improvements to masking.
It is long overdue that PL get a proper repair tool that is ai assisted, The current tool is way too basic and time consuming to use.
I hope they add a proper HDR (as in HDR10/HEIC) pipeline to edit that kind of images. That is where the future lie and all other major editors can do this.
For me the integration of Nik Collection is very annoying. When you edit an image using Nik, PL does not remember which plugin was used. They added to Nik the ability to re-edit the image. but you must remember which plugin yourself. This is poorly done. Nik integrates way better with the Adobe products and it should not be.
Having a tone curve under the local adjustment would be really nice.
In general PL9 got kind of sluggish with generating previews. They need to get the basics back and optimize the code.
I would love a simple Edit With manu when right-clicking on image to open it in another app, without first doing an export Every other editor with PAM does that.
The lack of AI for resolution increase, generative expand and such AI features, I don’t really care and are not a good fit for Photolab anyway. But AI assisted repair tools, masking, denoise that is all good.
