Once upon a time I installed an app on my Pixel4a phone that provided, and still provides, access to the forum.
It is still there and still works just fine on my 4a but failed to make the move from the 4a to an 8 Pro, purchased after Google rolled out a software update that has completely destroyed a portion of the 4a phones in the world with an update to “improve” the charging of 4a phones.
With one set (of 2 used) of battery cells fitted to the “same” make of battery this “enhancement” causes all manner of problems, in my case rapid discharge, so that recharging the phone multiple times a day is now a necessity!!
The transfer from the 4a to the 8 Pro was relatively straightforward but the forum app is circled and essentially absent on the 8 Pro. It is not in the PlayStore and a Google search suggests that there is no evidence that it ever existed!?
@Fabrice-B did this vanish as part of the response to the Spam attacks, or is it long gone, and could I have a copy to load onto my Pixel 8 Pro please?
The workaround is to visit the forum at forum.dxo.uk and create a “favourite”/bookmark in your “favourite” browser but it was slightly simpler to just press on the app icon and go straight into the application.
It is also possible to create a favourite with the address forum.dxo.uk/latest to get a shortcut straight to the “latest” posts, which is typically where I look when I am out and about and want to catch up on the latest posts.
@stuck that’s a back handed “compliment” if ever I saw one.
I have used only the app for remote access from my phone and it worked perfectly, until I discovered it was no longer available in the Play Store while migrating from one phone to another, along with about 5 other apps!
I had no need to “clutter” my browser with unnecessary “chaff”, so I didn’t and would still prefer the app for convenience. Plus I was intrigued by why it had apparently vanished!?
It is not really significant in the grand scheme of things missing from DxPL but it was just one more thing to sort out in the migration to the new phone.
I meant no offence, but the way your post is worded left me genuinely surprised that you appeared to have only just discovered that a simple browser bookmark could be a replacement for a dedicated App.
Similarly, one browser bookmark to the BBC website allows easy access to their news, sport and weather pages. That saves having three separate Apps chewing away in the background on the phone.
Of course, that’s not a better way of doing stuff, it’s just a different way of working.
@stuck I took no offence but did feel it was a little “harsh”, perhaps your expectations of my abilities are too high, which is flattering and possibly deserved but …!?
I had no reason to replace the DxO forum app because it worked just fine and was disappointed to find that it was no longer available because it had “mysteriously” vanished from the PlayStore.
I was pre-occupied with trying to get all the important apps, i.e. mostly to do with money, working on the new phone but was particularly intrigued by the results of a google search which informed me that there was no evidence that such a product ever existed.
It now impossible to repeat that search and get the same response, possibly because this post has changed that “reality”!?
With the Forum app it occupied a slot on my phone “desktop”, I use ‘Nova Launcher’ and its dump and recovery features certainly provided a useful shortcut to get the new phone looking like the old one!
I have BBC news app also on the phone “desktop”, I typically don’t want sport and actually find other weather apps seem to be more accurate but do still consult it from time to time.
I intend doing less in the forum but hope that what I do is to a high enough standard.
