Synchronize metadata with XMP sidecars: by checking this box you ensure the synchronization and updating of metadata recorded in the DxO PhotoLab database with the sidecar files (in the case of RAW files) and in the headings of DNG and RGB files (JPEG, TIFF) in XMP format.
Write the Keyword Hierarchy in the XMP dc :subject tag: lets you save the Keyword Hierarchy so that it is compatible with the Meta Data Dublin Core protocol.

Hello everyone, ( i asked this before on v8) or v7…

Once in awile i change some information like GPS data or some info in iptc almost never a keyword . aspecially GPS because bridge doesn’t understand the copy/paste coordinates of gmaps and DxO does. (if put this in dxo it lifes as far as i know only in dxo database and i have to manually update xmp/metadata by manual export of this image in order to update the GPS data. which apperantly not transfers to bridge GPS when i maunal export meta data… (writing error? like wrong way of latitude/longditude?

my workflow now is bridge 2026 and Fast Raw Viewer which profide the xmp files and such. if i am not have already dop files i change shotnumbers in camera model-shotnumber like G80-1234356.rw2 and G9-123456.rw2 so i don’t have conflicts.

An other thing: i have to remember do not change filenames in Bridge IF there are dop-files because Bridge sees them as RW2 extensions and make them broken. So then i have to use DXO instead but then i have to let it write to xmp file also…. i think to register filename change to all attached sub files…. (or overrides the filename change software the unchecked xmp sync. and picks all related files for changing?

As long as i go from ingestion to Bridge/RFV change file names and add keywords/iptc data and only when every thing is done open the rw2 in DxO i have no problem. :slight_smile:

What i am not really grasp/understand or read is which is master in this checkbox in prefferences? not checked active is read only, but is this read only and every time again or once?

When i check “synchronise metadata with xmp side cars” i probably not get a conflict warning and question which i would like to hold as latest/master. Soi that’s a bit hairy.

If i manually export metadata of 1 image it adds GPS data and as long as i don’t let keywords synchronised it probably works fine i think, hope, suspect? :-S

Rule number one in xmp management is one writer and many readers not more then one writer and aspecialy not two with automatic synchronisation both way’s so i alway’s left it off.

question how much is xmp management in DxO evolved?

( i still don’t like the [add keywords] bar which incline i have to gues which keyword i want from all i made to fit best on the scene. => Bridge has a tree visible and i scroll allong till i find the one i like. No risk to create unessecerry siblings which i have to repair later.)

i can keep uncheck write keyword in xmp so that’s not a problem to have keywords read only.

The problem is IPTC, dopfile, xmp file metadata in general. which risk do i have destroying my xmp, iptc data base by letting dxo database do his thing?

And if i need to add gps data in Bridge which easy way i have to convert gmaps gps data in to(Adobe) Bridge gpsdata?

I am really have to remember to export manually which i forget often and then i have to tab image for image to see if i did export which is a pain. i am rather have this on sync. and automatic.

( i have just redoing my hole database when i discovered that my G9 abc 1234 file number didn’t go past 9999 so after 9999 shots 0001 does made again… having a probably conflict in two and more abc0001.rw2 files. So i had to re write all my files towards a P-0000000 till now. and rename every abc1234 to the folder number and shot number which was P- folder number [000] and shotnumber 0000. not some thing i like to do again :wink: after the renaming i needed to change the name to FZ200_filename.rw2 and G80_filename.rw2 and LX100_filename.rw2 and G9_filename.rw2 so i didn’t got any file name doubles and risk of overwriting a image of the g80 by a same named file from G9.)

i wonder why i didn’t had the time to edit all my 2025/2026 files? :rofl:

any way how much risk do i have to ruin my iptc xmp metadata if i set sync active wile keeping keywords unchecked?

As long as

  • sync is on, you risk to change the xmp sidecars.
  • metadata is edited in more than one app, the same risk applies.
  • files are renamed at a later time, the same risk applies.

To prevent duplicate filenames

  • use something as unique as possible,
    e.g. a timestamp like YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS.UUU_original filename
    e.g. a camera body serial number rather than the model name
    and consider your preferred sorting of files

Preferred Sort Order

  • a timestamp prefix will make files sorted by date and time, which is easy to understand
  • a camera serial prefix will sort files by individual device, which might (not) be relevant in what you do
  • using additional metadata as prefix or suffix or generating all new names e.g. customer_Jobname_ID-Number, can cause clarity or confusion.

The important part is to a) think things through, b) decide on a pattern and c) stick to it for as long as possible … and to always rename files upon initial import in your one-and-only metadata manager app.

Adding a keyword is best done by selecting it from the keyword list. This helps to prevent Bird, Bert, Beard variants that can creep up over time and autocorrect settings.

Well 95% of the iptc , meta changing i do inside Adobe Bridge because 1 nl ui ,2 keyword tree, 3 clear toolbox. 4 its free. And gona stay free ( i hope) so continuesy should be garanteed.

If 5% , minor rewrites, gpsdata, some tweakes are inside dxo PL and done in sync without any manual actions that could be scary because notising a wrong action could be delayed for months on the other hand having to carve in a proces in your brain as in manual export every change you make inside iptc/meta data is as flawrisky as automatic. Only less destructive. That’s why i always used manual export.

I believe dxo has a auto rename file with camera dmc G80 or such but i have colorprofiled sRGB files P1234567.rw2 and adobeRGB files _1234567.rw2. Yes only effective on ooc jpegs. And i want As short filename as posible for my source files. So i can add suffix without reaching a stretch. The change that i own more then 1 G9 is slim. And if i own another it would be a G9II. So just g80, lx100, G9 wil be fine.

I do archive on [year] [3 months] [event name] and always keep the capturings date in the name of the folder which contain the files and the exported jpegs are a mirror of this source tree. Only change i made is video files had a sepperate archive but now i keep them together with the stills because i make lots of impression video “shorts” to support the stills but few long video capturings. (Editing video with a freeware app is a pain because davincy resolve is difficult to grasp and keep skilled if you do not use much of the profi toolset.)

About database of dxo, for searching photos or focus lengths and such its ok. For managing its too rudimentair so export the in dxo made changes are needed in order to keep some one place ordered metadata. It would be nice if a change in dxo could be triggering a reminder “ export changes?” yes/no Kind of popup.
