Sort the selected photos manually

Hello,

I need a Feature that give the possibility to sort manually photos via drag and drop in a project like paper prints on a table or dias on a lighttable.
So you can build in an easy visual way a good storyline for a book, an article, a show or other kinds of presentations.

That’s more than helpful it’s fundamental for a fluend workflow.

Thx, lightsearch

Did you see @Pieloe/Pascal’s response to you here ?

Yes, I do this all the time in Faststone - Before I open them in PL.

Faststone presents a “slide sorting light box” just as you would use with slides (film). You drag and drop the images into the order you want.

Once sorted, you can then rename them as you like and then open in PL.

I would like such a feature as well, I’ve been asking for it long time ago, without it projects are basically useless.

That works well if

  1. you accept using another tool besides PL
  2. you only have pictures from a single photo shoot. What if I want to have a project that combines different photos, e.g. I would like to print a photo book with abstracts and another with landscapes and another with black and white? How would I rename those files to fit all three projects?

Also the most important aspect is the visual connection of the pictures, in the edited state. One picture does not stand alone, but if it tells a story, I need to see them how they look well together. Maybe I decide one picture would look better in black and white, because of the picture before it. I cannot do such things using external programs.

I use multiple cameras and lenses so what is the issue with multiple software?
Anyway, in this case, PL does not have this function built-in and Faststone is not being used to process the images. Also, a lot of people process the raw then go to a pixel editor for further adjustments.

I have done this. First gather, sort and rename the abstracts and rename them to 1_##, landscapes group to 2_## and the B&W group to 3_## and combine them into one folder. Then open and process in PL. They will stay grouped.

Review the processed images in Faststone either as all that will fit on the screen, single image at a time; 2X2, 3X3 or 4X4. You can always go back to PL and reprocess. Quite often, I have Faststone and PL open at the same time and go back and forth.

When finished, you can always do a final sort and rename.

Really, this is a very simple process and I have been doing it for years - actually, decades.

It works, try it.

Maybe I need to try it, it just sounds so complicated when you are used to the workflow from within one software from the competitors. It does not sound like a complicated thing to integrate into Photolab, so the request is totally valid.

Even if this feature was built into PL, you will still need to create some method of sorting (drag and drop) and renaming the various groups.

This is what I outlined above. However, at this time, this is not possible in PL but has been a main feature of Faststone for decades.

Yes, it is a valid request and should be part of PL, however…

Faststone is very light weight and PL will happily run with FS in another window or screen.
