SOLVED - Got and installed PL8 but all PL7 Files still on disk?

Hi,

I just purchased the PL8 upgrade via the BF sale and then downloaded PL8 (via my DXO page) and then activated it, but I noticed that Windows “Add or Remove” still shows both PL7 and PL8, so I did uninstall PL7, but even after that it looks like the PL7 directory is still there on C:\ drive?

Should I/can I remove the PL7 directory? Or do I need to leave all those files there?

Thanks,
Jim

EDIT: OOPS! I checked again and the PL7 dir is now gone !!!

New installations of PhotoLab do not overlay previous versions. You can run multiple previous versions of PhotoLab simultaneously.

I think most of us keep the previous version loaded for at least some period of time as a feature comparison. Sometimes there are bugs and the previous version acts as a backup until the bugs are resolved. Sometimes existing features have been modified in unexpected ways and having the previous version installed can help reconcile whether a feature is working differently than expected, As an example, the Grid overlay in PL7 had an undocumented redesigned in PL 8, and most posters on the topic. my self included, prefer the way the feature worked in PL 7.

Unless disk space is a major limitation for you, I would have kept PL 7 installed for at least a few months after installing PL 8. Some users leave multiple previous versions installed for years.

Hi Mark,

Given that I already uninstalled PL7 is there any way to re-install PL7?

I don’t have any of the PL7 installers, but I do have a complete backup of the PL7 directory (I had imaged the C: drive).

EDIT: Hmm. So I restored the files from the backup for the PL7 directory and it looks like PL7 is working (PL8 also is still working). The main difference seems to be I don’t have PL7 in the Windows “Add or Remove”.

That’s just because you restored PLv7 from back-up - instead of (re)installing it.

I think if plv7 is still in the folder strongname… Something.
You can reinstall the older licence.
Normally by upgrade the activation of the older version is canceld.
That’s the upgrade price. Rebuy price would allow you to sell your older software to someone else. Like buying a new car. Then you allowed to sell your old one.

DxOPL upgrade is like you bring your car to the shop and they update your car for a fee. Because it’s software you have your old car next to the upgraded new one but it’s not sellable or moved to another pc of your own. (because then you could sell that pc with the software…
