My use case is this; I have a set of images. I want to export the set twice. Once, in full resolution for upload to an image library. This set should have no sharpening applied (as in unsharp mask) because this is what suits the clients of the image library. (They do their own). The second export is for my social media. Here I reduce the resolution and I want to apply sharpening. In LR I can do this at the point of configuring the export. It seems I cannot in PL7. This means that I have to use a workaround - of applying a sharpening preset, then doing the export, and then removing it - so my stored images don’t have this adjustment applied. This works, but is a hassle.
The feature request is to add an option for sharpening on the export dialog screen which applies only to the exported result, not the stored images.
I don’t know if it helps. Is this not about interpolation - which is about increasing an image pixel count beyond the amount available in the source. Does this have any effect if the image is staying the same size (pixels) or being reduced? Also - it doesn’t seem to be controllable. Either on, or off. (I forget right now if the feature in LR is controllable - but it would be nice anyway).
Am testing if it applies to resizing downwards.
Update
Yes. @Wolfgang - you are right. It (bicubic sharper) does seem to apply sharpening, based on my test - resizing to longest side 1600px. This works very well for my main use case - exporting a set of images at longest side 1600px for web use. Very little difference, if any, between bilinear and bicubic. I am resizing downwards - may make a difference if resizing upwards.
As concerns the case of exporting at full resolution. I tried exporting at resize…proportional…100% which is the only way you can get to export at full resolution and still have these choices. Here there was no real difference between bicubic/bilinear and bicubic sharper. This makes sense - it is not having to mess about with pixels and make decisions about which ones to keep and which not. But - this does seem to mean that this method would not work to add sharpening to images being exported at full resolution. I think LR’s sharpen on export button does that. (Think - I can’t test now as no longer have a copy of LR). This doesn’t bother me since my real need is to apply sharpening to the set I plan to use on the web. It could possibly be an issue for some people.
If you do not want/need to change the size, simply export without “Resizing”, i.e. you export in the currently available size (depending on your camera, your crop …).
The “Bicubic sharper” option can be helpful when downsizing an image, but I would recommend testing it with a few examples. It depends on the subject … especially for web use.
@Wolfgang - thanks. I just edited my post as you replied. It seems we agree: Bicubic Sharper is useful for the case when you want to export a set of downsized images with extra sharpening.
