Request for option to boost shadows on viewing images

Hello,
often when working in the Preview, my images are shown quite dark.
I wish, there would be some setting or button to turn on a (temporary and non-destructive) “Boost shadows”. It is really hard to find the best processing settings in dark regions.

If you set your output to JPEG and select Smart Lighting I think you get a lighter preview that you can use to select parameters. You can then select the output format to the one you actually want. It’s not a perfect solution, but helps a bit.

Hello Jeremy,
thank you for the suggestion. However, this workaround helps only marginal. For instance, I have got an image of a Common Redstart that is deep black at the head. By setting Smart Lighting it gets slightly (!) brighter, while anything else gets much darker.

But the idea is nice. Thank you.

I think it’s a good suggestion. I suspect the DxO team has not added such features to PureRAW because then a lot of users would be confused as to why their shadows or other exposure corrections done in PureRAW disappear from the generated DNGs. This could lead to an influx of frustrated users and bug reports.

They would need a user interface that strongly suggests “hey, this is only temporary and for your pixel-peeping needs”, and that can be a bit hard to pull off.

Still would be nice. Some of the RAW photo viewers I use for culling (FastRawViewer and ApolloOne) support this kind of exposure correction, which is either not saved at all or just saved to metadata in a XMP file.
