Replacing dng files created by PRv 4 with PR v6, in Lightroom

Hi, if I remplace my dng files developed in pure raw 4, which I had edited afterwards in lightroom, with the same file dng but smaller from PR 6 will Lightroom still keep the changes, the develop of the file I mean. Thanks, from Argentina.
I will apreciate very much your piece of advice.

Welcome to the forum @Eva

I understand that your goal is to reduce the file size of your DNG files.
If that were my only goal, I’d probably not plan to use PR 6 just for that.

If you have both PR 4 and P 6 installed, you could test your specific intentions with copies of a few files and see if it works out for you. My doubt is about a) PR 6 being able to do anything with the already processed image files from PR 4 and b) that Lightroom can and will re-apply its settings to the newly exported compressed DNGs.

Have you already trialed or bought PR 6? If not, I’d advise to hold until someone can give you a definitive and tried answer … and decide later. Rushing it might send you down a one-way street which is something I’d rather NOT want to do.

Please add more info about your gear: Mac/Win version, where and what your files are, etc. This info might help someone to test in similar conditions.

Hi platypus. Thank you for your answer. I haven’t buy it yet. I intend to process only the original raw files , and find out if lightroom will replace them automatically in the catalog.

PR 6 can overwrite your old DNGs, but they do contain Lightroom’s edits, which will be lost in the process.

If you have PR6 write separate DNG files, you can manually copy the settings of PR4 DNGs to PR6 DNGs. Whether that can be automated and how, I don’t know. LrC also writes ACR sidecars (for AI edits) and whether these settings carry over I can’t tell either.

You could test all this within the 14 days of a free PR trial, but you’d want a separate computer for that. PR installers usually overwrite older versions…but PR 4 and 6 seem to be able to co-exist

All things considered, if it’s about saving space, it’s probably less hassle to just get some extra drive space, internally or externally, depending on what your hardware can do.

ok, so you mean I cannot istall the trial version of PR6 in the same computer where I have PR4 full paid version?

@Eva , are you on Win or Mac?

Just installed PR4 and PR6 on my Mac and they seem to co-exist peacefully, at least according to apps, plugins etc. I might have gotten something wrong from testing several sub-versions of PR…but mostly of the same major version.

Looks like you’ll be able to test as far as I see on my Mac. If you’re on Win, your mileage may vary and I’ll not be able to help with that environment.

Sorry for the confusion.

I’m sorry for the delay. I use Win.

Thanks, I also installed the trial version PR6 in my PC with the payed version of PR4. I will see if it works ok.
