Now that is interesting!! All I would need from LR is the keywording. Hmmmm…
Okay, I thought they were lost in that catalog, I remember saving all my raw out of there, maybe I missed something, well… obviously I did. Thanks Pat.
Confirmed. I have downloaded and installed Lightroom Classic on my Mac. Each time I launch it it asks me to select a plan, but I can simply dismiss that and carry on doing my DAM work.
This is one happy camper, thanks Pat!
When I got rid of LR, I was already not paying anymore but the photo management (library) is still working and I did export each of my collection as a new catalog into a specific folder. This way I was able to copy all the pictures related to a specific event into one folder (with subfolders). After this export it was easy for me to reorganize my files into a simple folder structure.
As I already mentioned on the forum I use NeoFinder (http://cdfinder.de/) on Mac (scroll down the homepage to find it’s Windows ⊞ twin) to organize and search tagged files from my albums. After each update NeoFinder get better at tagging too although I prefer the use of ExifTool to tag directly (a copy of) my raw files.
It is worthwhile to try out Photo Supreme by https://www.idimager.com. The best DAM solution for me
I can support this.

Are you importing new photos into the catalog and adding keywords and such? How do the keywords get into your processed images? I’m guessing that you keyword in LR, the info is written to an xml file, then when you process the raw image in PL and export a jpg/tif, the keywords are them embedded into the final image?
My camera shoots DNG natively and I went back and converted all my old Pentax PEF files to DNG (using Adobe DNG converter and Lightroom). So all my images are DNG or JPEG (old stuff before I shot RAW). Both of these file formats can have the keywords written directly into them, which is what I do. Or rather, what Lightroom does for me.
In my Lightroom-less years between abandoning it as my main tool and now, I have simply had an automation copy new photos off my SD card into an “Auto Import” folder which is a sibling to all my year folders. Then in Luminar or PhotoLab I could drag them into the right year/month folder. Now I will go back to the old system of “importing” them directly in Lightroom (note to self, turn off the automation!) which will put them directly into the year/month folder.
Once I’ve put them in the folder and added my keywords, I write the keywords to file (a separate but easy task) and then open PhotoLab whereupon I refresh the folder and it has all the photos and all the keywords at its disposal. Once any final JPEG is output, PhotoLab will include those keywords for me.
Hi zkarj,
As a refugee from Aperture days, I too have an aversion to software that locks me, and my images, and keywording into their system.
That said, Lr seems to be among the better ones I’ve used, and if I stop using it as a paid, I’d be comfortable to use the dam features and export for post production, and because of the lens modules, and the sharpness, DXO is my first choice.

That’s also my final choice except of course for my Fuji X-Trans photos. Unfortunately, I have replaced almost all my Canon gear with Fuji cameras.
Hi Pat,
Yep, feel the pain. I’m tossing about going forward, with Sony, the more I see, the warmer the fuzzy feel becomes.
But of course that means readjusting. Perhaps not as much as the Fuji, but you do have some cracker lenses to chose from as well.
Its a great time to be a photographer and a gear freak, hard to imagine how far we’ve come in 10 years, and I was happy with a mere 6megapixel for magazine shoots.
I just added keywords to 501 frames of about 35 different subjects (and not all contiguously) from a shoot I did today. It took me about 25 minutes in Lightroom. Most of that time was working out which keywords I needed to add and researching and creating some new ones in the correct place in the hierarchy. For those keywords I already had (around half of the subjects) it was simply a few keystrokes and I was done. It honestly felt like the hard work was picking the right keywords, and not dealing with the tool, which simply let me get on with the job.
Now it’s over to PL to pick the best and make them look fantastic.
an easy way for keywords is just to create a list in Notes (mac) or Words, sorry i forgot the one for Windows.
just start with a list of different type of photography you do then add your favourite #ashtags like the two example below, then you can just add specific one for the image you’re working on like name and location, done.

Notepad is the one you’re thinking of. I did try a similar sort of approach at first but drove myself crazy. My tagging is not so much categorisation as identification.
Below is a screen capture of about 500 lines from the 1308 lines in my [aircraft] hierarchy. It is, in general, manufacturer, model, model variant, name, registration mark. Some are a bit shallower than that but always at least three levels and many contain synonyms. Then I have airfields and air operators (think airlines, air forces etc) – both of which are much simpler hierarchies, but many of which also have synonyms. And that aircraft hierarchy is as it stands today — I still have a bunch of historic keywords in other versions of this which I need to move, plus there is frequently new stuff to add
It’s these hierarchies that do the work. I type “ZK-NZF” and I get “ZK-NZF, ZK-NZF3, 787-9, 787, Boeing” then I type “NZAA” and I get “NZAA, Auckland International Airport” then I type “Air N” and select (probably from near the top of the auto-complete list if it’s been used recently) “Air New Zealand”.
Then there are my location hierarchies — Frank Kitts Park, Wellington City, Wellington, North Island, New Zealand, Oceania — my bird hierarchies (a work in progress) which is simpler but full of synonyms, and a new one I’m working on for family members, so I can just enter a first name and get surname, relationship (sister, uncle, niece, etc).
And these are just as far as I have decided to take them. Many aircraft types come in tons of minor sub-variants which, so far, I have decided to stay away from. My current — woefully incomplete — keyword list is 2,721 lines long fully expanded. I get that many people have simpler needs, but Lightroom absolutely has the power to do what I am doing, so I have to believe there are other mad people like me.
Thanks, Notepad.
Different people = different keyword way.
You need an attached list to you images
But yes having an advanced keywording system work better, I use PM with pre-made keywords pack I made for different items, can just add more for specific but I don’t add as much as you I guess.
So far I’ve built up a list of 12,144 ‘keywords’ (labels) and synonyms that I use in Photo Supreme, and most can be applied a fast as I can type. Plus, if I decide to change one, or relocate it in the hierarchy, all my photos are automatically updated. Certainly wouldn’t want to try that using Notes / Notepad
Trialing it now… How often is IMatch updated and how much does it usually cost for upgrades?
Cheers.
XnViewMP has no concept of “offline” folders, right?
Cheers.
Trying it… Is it possible to make digiKam shows collections even when they are offline (e.g. on a NAS)?
Cheers.
