As a PureRAW 5 owner, I am testing PureRAW 6 right now. I am a Fujifilm user, so the most interesting new feature for me are the compressed DNGs.
My only workflow is export RAWs from Lightroom to PureRAW and automatically import the resulting DNGs back then process further in Lightroom and others. If I do it with a single RAW file, everything is fine. However, running a larger batch (I tried 10 and 20) and setting the output to compressed DNG, I get a mix of compressed and uncompressed DNGs. In a batch of 20 there are usually only 4-5 compressed ones and the others are uncompressed.
I did check that the output is set to compressed, no matter which RAW photo I select. I also checked that if I single-process the files which resulted in uncompressed DNGs, I get the correct compressed files. It seems that the issue is with batch-processing.
I did some more testing, and this issue seems to be Lightroom related. If I send the batch from Lightroom Classic, I get the mixed results (but always much more uncompressed photos). If I import the same RAW files directly to PureRAW 6, all the output is compressed.
I have done lots of testing in the last few hours, and found something which may explain why you cannot see the issue (BTW I’m also on Win11).
If I choose Process instantly… in Lightroom, the issue does not happen, everything is compressed nicely. If I choose Preview and process… however, it happens every single time. Even with a smaller batch, like 4 images. Also, Process instantly… is much much much faster.
Same issue here but having issues narrowing it down.
“Process Instantly from” created compressed BUT took so long i stopped it after 10 mins (it had done 3).
I then did “Preview and process” from the menu to try agian, this time it worked but all the files written were uncompressed.
Edit- Can confirm a random mix.
Created 35 from Lightroom, 2 uncompressed. Another batch using “Preview and process with” produced 3 out of 12.
Its easy to tell if they’re compressed - Windows explorer, photo viewer and image glass cannot display the image or generate a thumbnail of the compressed DNG but can with the normal one.
So if you can see it outside the photo editing process, its uncompressed.
New user here - I’m having issues as well. If I add 10 photos into Pure Raw, all are selected, then go to Output settings and select what I want (compressed, custom folder, etc) only the first image gets processed the way I set. The rest are all processed under the “default?” settings. In order to get all the images to be treated to the same output settings, I have to copy and paste the settings one at a time to each photo…… This is awful. Am I missing something?
No, unfortunately the issue is not Lightroom related… I do not use lightroom and have the same funny problem. If I select a batch the output will randomly generate compressed (a few) and uncompressed dng’s.. Thanks for the testing!
I had a long correspondence with DxO Support about this, and now it’s clear how it’s working. It’s a strange UX design, but at least consistent.
Basically, when you select processing with preview, all photos are processed with some kind of default settings until you actually preview them. That’s why you always get the first photo compressed, because that’s the photo you are previewing when the application starts. And all the other photos you click on and take a look at are processed with your settings, so they’ll be compressed. You don’t have to change a single setting, just preview the photo and then they’ll be processed with your settings. The photos you never look at, will be processed with DxO’s default settings, and will be uncompressed. I know it sounds strange, but this is actually how it works: if you process with preview, you are actually expected to preview all photos.
But, there is a shortcut instead of previewing. When you start the preview, you right click on the first photo (the one with your settings) and choose Copy all settings, and then right click on it again, and choose Paste all settings, and then magically they will all be using your settings and will be compressed.
I think it’s silly UX, and said so to DxO, but this is actually how it works. You can try.
This issues doesn’t occur via Lightroom Classic if “Process Immediately” is selected. The ones that aren’t viewed will use that last settings used. I would think a preset with compressed file enabled could be used to solve this issue. Bottom line, in the Process/view setting any change only affects the image that is being viewed. Obviously this affects all settings not just DNG compression.
This sounds plausible, and I know even before trying, it will work… Thank you for your efforts. I shall try your second advice (copy and paste all settings) tomorrow. Now it’s bedtime in my country. Greetings from Jan
Not convinced. I get it using the “Process directly” lightroom option too. Sometimes. And its not always the first photo in a batch, sometimes its in the middle and so on.
