PureRaw 5 Surprise

Hi and welcome here.

DeepPrime XD 3 (still in beta phase) is currently reserved for Fuji X-Trans files and also does not support the “5th generation” yet.

= your Sony cameras are not supported

I made detailed comparisons PR4/DeepPrime vs. PR5/DeepPrime-3.
After turning the “Details” slider of DeepPrime-3 from 50 to 80, I got almost 100% identical results in PR4 and PR5.

Regarding runtime: 37s vs. 37s.

Hello everyone, I too was surprised by the performance of the new DP3 algorithm, which is definitely less efficient than DP2xd.
To obtain the same denoise I have to set ‘luminance’ to 65 instead of 40, but the rendering is still inferior because slight artefacts appear and the image is not as precise as DP2xd.

Attention… using DP2xd on PR5 gives near the same results as with PR4, by default the ‘force details’ slider on PR5 is set to 0, on PR4 it is set to 10, so you need to put higher on PR5…or you have to use higher “sharpen”

On the other hand, I have encountered an unpleasant problem on PR5, every time I open a photo with equipment that I have not previously downloaded as a definition, the programme does not apply the corrections for that lens/machine until I restart the application.
Also missing is the button to clean the workflow from all added files
Really disappointed.

PS
By the way, I don’t know for what reason but the system had blocked an account I had created for the forum and since they wouldn’t unblock it I had to create another one.
DXO…what is going on?

To all concerned: these issues need to be reported to DxO via support.dxo.com. DxO isn’t likely to respond here or be able to work on fixes from forum posts alone.

Hey!

The probably most annoying feature/bug introduced in v4 was the sticky tray icon, startup app and not exiting on close…

Did they fixed in v5 all of that in V5?

This alone would boost productivity and be worth 70€ for me.

Cheers

Yes. I think they just screwed up totally this release:

  • press release gave the impression image quality would been improved. But it was just DeepPrime 3 with better CA. XD2s similar to v4. XD3 is reserved for X Trans
  • Masking won’t be used by much people I guess… this is more a feature for full editing software like PhotoLab
  • I guess the same bugs introduced in V4 renain…
  • there are obviously additional bugs in the v5 “,0”

I guess, we will see in 2-3 mouths a 5.1 addressing this issues, adding XD3 for everyone and (for me) just removing mask.

Also, they should really change they upgrade policy and allow user to install previous version! I don’t think it will cost then anything but would improve customers fidelity.
Honestly, I would just buy the upgrade if I could stay on V4 if needed…

This begs the question, why spend money going to PR5 if the results are identical.

I’m always surprised when people pay for and install software only to find that there is a problem which could have been identified in a free trial installation. While I don’t use PureRaw, I have been a user of PhotoLab since PhotoLab 1 in 2017. Even though I have owned and used every version of PhotoLab since then, I still download and test the trial version every year prior to purchasing it.

The EULA breach would only be when activating the discounted upgrade license, right?

If buying a full price license, the old license will still be valid and both versions are available going forward?

Yes, you understand correctly.

Of course, whether or not DxO can enforce that part of the EULA is another matter. If you already have PR4 installed and licensed and then pay for a low-cost upgrade to PL5, which you then install and activate on the same computer, you might be able to actually run both at the same time even though it technically violates the terms of the EULA. As far as I know, the EULA doesn’t allow this for any reason. I don’t know if DxO actually deactivates the old license, though. They haven’t been doing that with PhotoLab. DxO could probably give a customer permission to temporarily continue using an old version of the software for a particular purpose - for example, if something makes PR5 unusable but not PR4.

They don’t stop you from updating an older version even if you have a newer version installed and activated.

…As long as you do the update from the logon notification. You won’t have access from your “My software” page.

From within the software, obviously.

You didn’t need to upgrade in order to properly test PR5. Trial version resides on computer separately and works just fine. Mine expires in 4 days and I will not be upgrading.

You can get outstanding results with PR5 and Fuji GFX 100S and variants with the following settings: Force Details 90 and Sharpening 150. Slightly better than PR4. These files need to be pushed a lot more to get the full benefit of the 100 MP files. With these settings (for landscape anyway) the files are not oversharpened. I will probably upgrade to PR5 due to the flexibility with the sharpening and the ability to save custom presets for different cameras. As pointed out by others, sometimes you want to do a lot less sharpening in PureRaw so you can do local sharpening in LR of the subject.

Is PR5 better? Not necessarily, but it is not worse with the proper settings.
