.psd and .psb files in Photolab 9

I have indexed my drives but my psd and psd files do not show in PL 9. Does PL 9 support psd and psd files? If not, what do you save your files as if you go over the 4 gig TIFF limit?

PL does not suport psd/psb files.

What do you want to save as TIFF files > 4 GB ?
You should also flatten layers.

Thank you for the reply.
I will convert them to TIFF and the few that I can’t save as TIFF’s I will leave as psb’s and open in Photoshop if I need to open them.

Panoramas and focus stacking for macro can quickly become more than 4 gigs.
I do delete un-needed layers and/or rasterize smart object layers, but I don’t flatten all of my layers.

I meant saving as flattened TIFF files, not flattening PSD files to the background layer. Keep them, by all means.

I’m on Windows and use Imatch as database. In my knowledge there is no known Filetyp Imatch cannot handle.

Ahh ok that makes sense. Thanks!!

I am on an iMac but I see that there is this as an alternative - Photo Supreme v2025.

If PL 9 can actually search across multiple folders like Lightroom Classic does then I shouldn’t need another DAM software. I have the PL9 30 day trial and will do many searches to see what PL can do with organization and keeping track of image keywords, metadata and so on. I get really tired of Lightroom Classic and its constant metadata conflict errors; a file that hasn’t been opened in any other program can suddenly show metadata conflicts. It is a well known bug that has never been addressed

In case your camera and lenses are supported, you should consider PL as a RAW file converter whose core competency is noise reduction and support for good lens profiles, both of which are not available for TIFF files. And to make fully use of PL you also need Filmpack. … Or to put it another way: I wonder what your goal is.

→ Referring to an older entry in your profile … Do you (still) use the Nik Collection?

There’s also the excellent open-source digiKam on Mac, Windows, and Linux.

I started looking into DXO after I screwed up my camera settings on one trip out and the only software that could handle the noise was Pure Raw; that has started me looking in DXO so that I can dump Lightroom (I have a love/hate relationship with that program). I am in the process of hopefully switching the raw editing to PL. My cameras and lenses are all supported and I was kind of playing in the editor this morning and it is amazing how well the geometry for the lenses works, the profiles are spot on for my gear.

I will always use PS as my heavy hitter for editing; it is where I am comfortable, I have spent a lot of time and money to get proficient in it lol.

I had quit using Nik but I recently bought it again, I mainly use it for black and whites, I mainly switch to Silver Efex if I can’t get the black and white look that I want in PS, but I do love a few of the filters in Color Efex as well. Darken/Lighten Center, Detail Extractor, Pro Contrast, Skylight are all great to use.

I quit trying to use Palette Gear and bought a drawing tablet. I had a Wacom but it had so many driver issues both in Windows and on my iMac that I bought a cheap tablet by XPen and I love it.

I have downloaded a trial of PhotoSupreme as a DAM, and if it works like it is reported to, I will be happily deleting Lightroom Classic.

Thank you! I will look into it tonight.

Well, that’s a long story and you are also aware of PureRAW.

I was wondering why you’d want to edit TIFF files in PhotoLab, skipping the noise reduction and lens corrections that should be done first. The latest version of PhotoLab now supports some AI features that can help with masking, but these are quite hardware-intensive. And while we have some layer techniques available, these are nowhere near as sophisticated as those in Photoshop …

Although I use PhotoLab together with FilmPack and ViewPoint, I still love and use Nik, as you have already mentioned, also together with old PS and Wacom tablet … , and use PS also for finishing prints.

With metadata, keywords, and the like I cannot help you (store my data as described here).

Test thoroughly, PL and the other components are not cheap.

I don’t plan on editing tiffs in PL, but will change from psd to tiff for cohesion so that my files all show in PL. I don’t want to have to bounce back and forth in different programs to locate or view files. As my machine ages I am looking at options to have less programs and plug ins open. So far my iMac is keeping up but the more AI stuff that gets put into programs the more it will start to struggle in the near future and stepping out and spending another 5000 is not an option right now lol.

One of my reasons for trying PL is to end the issue of having both an NEF file and the DNG file that was generated by Pure Raw4 as a LRC plug in and to save steps and space.

I LOVE Pure Raw, it saved the day when I messed up so badly and had shots that had brutal noise. I have not made the same mistake since, I frequently check settings now instead of thinking that I have the camera set up right for the shots happening. I can only blame exhaustion and complacency lol

Keywords are a critical part of me being able to quickly locate files. I started using them when we were shooting waterbirds. Some shots have 6 or more different birds so using file names or species folders would have been a nightmare. Those shots are not for much other than identification purposes but if they are keywords with species, location and renamed by date it makes it easy for me to see where and when we have found Red Headed ducks for example, or where and when we found nesting owls etc.

Photolab is the best raw processor but it’s a poor DAM as it only shows files it can edit. If you want to keep and manage psd and other non-raw/tiff/jpeg files consider a real DAM. I use PhotoSupreme with Photolab and couldn’t be more pleased. It’s one click of a photo in Photosupreme to get the file open n PL. Easy as can be. And I get so much more management capabilities than PL can provide.

When you need to do a search with PhotoSupreme its nearly instantly showing the images
