Well I wanted to move from Capture One to DXO but the cost is approx the same to get the latest versions in CDN dollars. However I find that in order to use the vignetting you need to buy the film pack at another $100 CDN, whats with this? Every other raw editor on the market includes a fully functional vignetting tool. This then totals approx $380 CDN, $100 more then upgrading Capture One to the latest version. While DXO is cheaper on the upgrades every year than Capture One. I am in a trial and find issues with the toolbar at the top left disappearing, the inability to move the histogram from the left to the right panel and it will not stick where I place it in the customize screen. There are other issues that I dont think this is quite ready yet. Just my thoughts.
Some folks here consider PhotoLab incomplete unless you also buy the FilmPack and ViewPoint add-ons, and that it’s some kind of kindness that we can get a functioning RAW editor for “less” by not buying FP/VP as standard.
I disagree.
FP/VP are essential to a fully functioning PhotoLab experience. You don’t get Luma masking unless you pick up FP either.
The good news is that once you have all three, you technically don’t need to spend any more money again next year.
The bad news is that once new versions are released, you won’t get any extra features or updates made for those updates. For instance, I have FIlmPack 7, not 8, and won’t get any of the changes made to 8 unless I pay more.
It’s a crappy business practice by DxO to carve up essential features and place them in their add-on products, making them essentially essential.
There’s no way around this. If you want the functionality they’ve put in FilmPack or ViewPoint then you have to buy them.
The Histogram can be dragged into Essential Tools on the Right-Hand Side.
To display Essential Tools just ensure that none of the other options are selected. This panel can be used for ANY of the edit functions so the most commonly used can be put into one place.
I think OP means the Creative Vignette function:
AFAIK that only comes with FilmPack (for some reason).
This is for correction of unwanted lens vignetting, but not to add vignetting–which may or may not be what @ozphoto is looking for. FilmPack does indeed provide the “creative vignetting,” which PL9 does not have (and which Capture One does, basically, have as well).
Ah, you beat me to it
I lurk too much ![]()
In the interests of… fairness… to DxO, I should point out you can probably create a Creative Vignette using gradient masks or control points.
It’s unnecessarily fiddly though, considering C1 and Lightroom come with it as-standard. (As they do with Luma Masking etc.)
Essentially, yes.
I took the “before” and made the following adjustments with Creative Vignette (see the right tool bar).
It’s worth noting that with CV you can specify the centre point, so the vignette doesn’t have to be dead-centre. If your subject is off centre, you can still target the vignette.
Yes I agree it is crappy thats why I wont be moving from Capture One to DXO other than the Nik Collection these tools should be standard. I would hate to be the person who does not do some research and buys the product then realizes they dont get these tools that other raw editors have. Not good public relations and It is very underhanded in my mind.
Yup – likewise! ![]()
I just darkened my image and added a control point mask to lighten it around the balloon.
for “homemade” vignettes check → Post Crop Vignettes? - #8 by Wolfgang
The Vignetting feature in PL 9.2 requiring a FilmPack license is not for the correction of vignetting. It is the Creative vignetting tool used to creatively add variations of vignetting to an image.
