PR 4 DNG size

Hey folks… I’m new to the DxO ecosystem and I’m just playing around experimenting.

One quick question regarding raw processing with PR 4. When I process a Nikon Z8 file that is about 66MB, the resulting DNG file is ~150MB.

Is that typical for this workflow? Is it a product of the conversion and information PR4 is storing in the DNG or is this a DNG thing (I’ve only used my NEF files prior)?

Is there a way to reduce the resulting file size?

Thanks,
Tom

If you are using PhotoLab, there is absolutely no need to use PureRaw. It is meant to be a demosaicer for pixel editors

Indeed… I understand that… I’m just going through all of the stuff I have on my computer right now trying to learn stuff… Thus my question.

I do appreciate all of your help.

Tom

PL OR PR will output a demosaicked DNG file ( means 3 color components /“RGB”/ for each pixel instead of just one color component per each sensel in your NEF ), so even w/ a good compression expect a bigger size…it is by design…

This is not a DNG format feature. DNG can also store undemosaicked data, but that is not what PL/PR intent is. The purpose of the tools, as designed by DxO when producing DNG output, is mostly to have a good quality demosaicking combined with good noise reduction (NR) and good optics corrections. This allows other tools further down the pipeline to do the rest for you (like color transform and/or retouching, etc.).

Sorry there is no way to reduce the size of the linear DNG exported from PR4. The output file benefits from DxO optical corrections and denoising. You then process the linear DNG in your raw editor of choice e.g Lightroom Classic or Affinity Photo.

Using PhotoLab avoids the need to create large DNG files.

one can always do a lossy compression next using Adobe tools if that for whatever reason is needed ( lesser file size ) and /the amount of/ quality loss is OK
