PL 9.6 on Mac. not reading XMP metadata

The rating is in the XMP file, but PL is not using it.
it is a new directory and has no Dop files, only the ORF and XMP file

I have ensured that the sync is enabled.
But the rating is not reflected in PL

BTW, should PL be using Dop files at all?

Any ideas please

Ratings should be read from xmp the first time an image is seen by PhotoLab, but if metadata sync was off the first time, you can always have PL import metadata manually from the file menu.

Ratings should show…provided that displaying ratings is enabled on PL’s preferences. Check the settings to make sure.

The “dop” files (settings sidecars) are enabled by default and serve as partial backups for edits and metadata. If you use PL as a plugin and don’t care to re-do edits once in a while, you can switch them off. Most users prefer to leve dop import and export to the default “on* settings.

Thanks platypus, I think it is the format of the XMP file created by DigiKam. I tried Apolloone and the ratings are appearing PL. So, the issue is not with PL by the look of it. I will dig a bit further.

Have you tried manual metadata import?

XMP is a well described format, but not all follow the recommendations. I’d also check the settings of DigiKam in order to see if some option bends the rules (so to speak).

A simple search for digikam xmp issues brings up a lot of information. Check out this:

Thanks for getting involved. I think that there is nothing wrong with either application. The issue only happens with a few images. I don’t see anything different between the ones that show the rating and the others.
Regarding the DOP files, I dont see them being created and I can’t find a setting to enable them. Would you please help me to enable them; I dont use PL as a plug-in, only as a stand-alone editor?

Again, thanks for the help.

DigiKam does not use 100% compatible metadata

Thanks Joanne, That sort of makes sense. Do you know where it is less than 100% compatible?

I found the DOP setting and PL is now creating them.

oh yes, xmp files get weirder with every major version upgrade. Lightroom has made changes regarding keywords, but what strikes me is that DigiKam seems to be able to change HOW metadata will be saved. I’ll not dig into it though and @GRD seems to have come to peace with metadata transport of most of his images.

The whole metadata standardisation remind me of something we said when sailing with friends a few years ago:
