Photolab 9 Performance Issues

Shit - WW III is starting - I stay neutral as last time - I"m Swedish

I’m using a 2021 16” MacBook Pro (M1 processor I think) with the trial version of PhotoLab 9. I wouldn’t call it speedy with Nikon Z7 45mp files but it isn’t sluggish either. I’m not a pro and I don’t edit huge numbers of files so speed is not critical. I’m perfectly happy with the performance. So far no glitches or bugs.

In regard to Adobe, I left them as soon as they went to the subscription only model and never looked back. I have no use for their bloated software, bloated prices and harsh terms. A lot of pros stick with them because they simply have no choice, not because it is somehow more ‘pro’, whatever that is supposed to mean.

I have used other platforms and have never missed LR in the slightest. The last higher end platform I used was Capture One which is great but my copy is many versions old so I’m giving PhotoLab a try.

So far, no performance issues even on my old-ish MacBook. The UI is good but maybe not great. The AI masking and noise reduction are new to me and I am very impressed. Will likely purchase when trial is complete.

What the hack happening here?

Where is the relation to PL?

Just chatting to Stenis, whilst the guys who PL9 is working well smugly tell the guys where it’s not working at all, that it’s their fault.

Me and Stenis, we’ve moved on.

I moved over to DxO PL v5 when it was released in 2021, and I don’t miss LR at all, finding the U-point controls powerful and intuitive. Nevertheless, after experimenting with the trial edition, I am now enjoying the AI-guided local adjustments in v9. My only complaint is the relatively short-lived new OS support. For example, I would have happily continued with v5, since none of the new features were particularly compelling. But v5 stopped working only 3 years later, with an upgrade to MacOS Sequoia. Obviously, indefinite new OS support is not realistic, but 3 years strikes me as suboptimal. And the lack of an upgrade path from v5 to v8 meant a full cost upgrade. And yes, I could equally well place the blame on Apple, but either way, I would have spent less with LR’s subscription model! Nevertheless, I remain a huge fan of DxO, which runs flawlessly on my new M3 MacBook Air.

I tend not to upgrade licenses unless there is a compelling reason to, so yes, it would be very frustrating to lose support on a version in 3 years. But, I also agree, some of that is on Apple too. If I can get 4 years out of PL9 I will be more than happy and not using anything from Adobe is just icing on the cake.
