I’m not DxO, which you surely know.
Who knows? Who anyone is?
I have to agree. I sold my very capable PC (specs below) and got a Mac Mini M4 Pro base model, which can handle my 40 MP Fujifilm raws easily. The Mac actually outperforms the PC in snappiness easily. Only export was slightly faster per image with the PC, but I prefer a faster UI over a few seconds export speed loss.
The base Mac Mini M4 Pro is $1250 or thereabouts. I added a thunderbolt dock with a 2 TB SSD. This thing is the tiny compared to my PC, which was in a mini ITX case.
- AMD Ryzen 7 5900X CPU (12 core)
- GIGABYTE X570 AORUS PRO WIFI
- ASRock Radeon RX 6700 XT Challenger 12GB
- Kingston KC2000 1TB NVMe SSD
- G.Skill 32GB RAM (2x16GB, 3200)
- Corsair SF750 Platinum PSU
You nearly made a MAC user out of me with that comment… Except I know we Europeans pay a lot less for our healthcare than you who suffer in the hands of insurance companies and insane bills. So, I stay with Windows!
I am European too! ![]()
But every year I pay around 55K EUR of taxes, and my wife 60K. Multiply that for the 25 years we have been working… and from simple math it’s wrong to say that “we pay a lot less”. In case (knock on wood) we will ever need the public “free” health system for something expensive, we have already well paid in advance.

Here in France, as we pass 70 years old, we are now having to pay around €1000 per year for a “mutuelle”. Apparently it’s for those little luxuries like a bedroom to stay in when we go to hospital, consultants fees, etc. What gets to me is that we are obliged to take out cover for glasses, even if we don’t need to wear glasses

Lucky you that can afford those taxes!
Here everyone that needs a cataract operation can get it for just 20-30 U$ (what it costs to visit a hospital) if they need one.
I fixed both my eyes 3-4 years ago and got it for free because of some reason I had a high cost protection.
My sister liverd 25 years in US and got non-hodgkins lymfoma and had no insurance. She died at 55 because she got poor treatment to late and was to sick to fly home. She was working at Beachwold Natural Medicine Clinic in Ohio - a place poor people that can´t afford proper medical tratment went to . I guess it is even worse now with TRUMP
I used to have a boss. One day he was moaning about how much tax he paid. So I said to him “What you need to do is to tell the accounts department to pay your wages to me, and to pay my wages to you, then you’ll pay less tax”. He never took me up on my kind offer.
Later in life, I got a job for a short while where I was paid a silly amount of money. I never once moaned about the tax I had to pay. If you are not earning it, you can’t pay it.
Think of it this way. By accident of birth, you are born in a rich country, clean water, safe(ish) food, where pretty good healthcare is universal and free at the point of use (obviously not the US) and there are job and career opportunities to make your way through life and when you are older a pension. You could have been born in Southern Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan - the list is virtually endless. Be grateful for what you have and thank your lucky stars that you were born and live where you do.
It’s worse now because of the Affordable Care Act enacted by Obama, taxpayers pay billions to the Insurance Companies whose profits have soared while they deny claims.
The latest subsidies are due to expire at the end of the year, they were set to expire by Democrats while Biden was President.
The shocking state of US Health care is entirely the responsibility of Democrats, not a single Republican voted for the ACA.
I pay around 20k in income taxes in Sweden.
25€ for a doctors appointment and 35€ if an emergency.
What ever is needed during that visit is included. Blood panels, CT, MR, surgery, specialist and what ever.
When I’ve payed a total amount of 130€, I go into a 0-cost for the rest of a year - counted from first care appointment.
If I need to spend a night after care, that’s about 12 € all inclusive.
I can live with that.
Um, wasn’t this thread about performance issues with PL9? ![]()
One might believe so - but no. ![]()
Being able to run PL on a MacBook Pro for a weekend on batteries from tax financed hospital care is where performance issues arise and benchmarked when choosing one platform or the other. ![]()
I think that Americans misunderstand how countries actually work. I get that there is and always has been a strained relationship between DC and the states but………. People pay taxes so the Government can spend that money on things that benefit people’s lives. Like infrastructure, defence and health care. In Europe this is understood.
So generally speaking the average wage in the US is lower than in Europe. But their tax burden is lower. But the result of this is that they end up with no more money personally and a system that is breaking down - The US national debt is over $38 trillion.
Even if the EU includes member states from the old east bloc, their life expectancy is 3 years longer than that in the US. It doesn’t sound like much but the EU stats show significant increases each year whilst the US figures suggest almost stagnation.
I voted for a Government that will implement changes that will increase the amount of tax I will pay. I did it because it was the right thing to do, the right thing for my country. After all, There is not point being the richest man in the graveyard.
We’ve moved on and having a chat while DxO “work on it……..”
Thanks for the tips. Since there are plenty of threads that actually deal with PL9’s performance issues, I can safely ignore this thread without missing any important information.
I’m working on a new M4 Max with 64GB RAM, 16 core CPU + Neural processor, and the 40 core GPU; this baby flies. Just chiming in to say that I have been seeing many of the performance and stability issues others have noted on older Mac systems. If I had to rely on this release for paid client work I would be screwed.
Yep, it’s unprofessional. That’s why why professionals use Adobe.
But the truth is that for most people something like DxO, Luminar Neo, ON1 is going to be able to offer plenty. The idea of paying a substantial amount each month for software that I’ll use every now and again is ludicrous. I’d rather spend it on holidays to great places like New Zealand.
the truth is that

That might work in German, in English, It just sounds foolish.
You didn’t understand. It has to sound foolish, for fools to understand. You are too great for that.
