PhotoLab 9.9 and AI masking

I’m finding the AI masking doesn’t work at all on my system with a Ryzen 9 5900X and 64GB DDR4 RAM with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Super 4GB

From reading post on the subject of AI, I take it my GPU doesn’t cut it for the AI stuff? In the Performance tab of the Preferences dialog, the AI Acceleration drop-down shows that my GPU is greyed out and the CPU is used.

When I choose local adjustments, AI masking and add an AI mask, choosing “Faces”, the popup dialog shows saying “Detecting faces…” but when complete/disappears, no face is selected/masked but I do see a small mask icon on the face which does nothing other than togle between the selection of the Mask and AI Mask (Faces) in the list of masks in the local adjustments pane.

Do AI masks not work at all without a modern GPU?

So does the amount of VRAM matter for an Nvidia RTX GPU? I’m looking at a 5060Ti with 8g! Ram or 16GB ram, but the latter is very expensive.

I went for the 5060TI with 16GB. I was lucky and got it a resonable price on Black Friday just before pricing again went crazy! It works very fine with PL 9 on my Ryzen 5700G / 32GB RAM. Anyway, according to the release notes a 5060 with 8GB should work fine.

I might wait for the BF deals on Amazon

The “greyed out” is just now with 9.9 or also in previous PL versions (like 9.8.x) ? Its can be an important point.
May a screenshot can be nice, how “its looks” (the “greyed out”) in the settings, just for curiosity - i never see “grayed”, but i know it’s possible.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Super 4GB

In PL 9.8.x and all before PL show me my “AMD (Radeon) RX 550 4GB” just fine (not “grayed out”). And AI works with even this GPU, BUT ONLY in “manual” AI masks (selection, area) AND NOT with “Faces” and other pre-defined AI masks (“Faces” and so on need more GPU VRAM) and export with AI masks was possible only with DP3 NR (and not DP3 XD). But anyhow, with 4GB its works, not fast, but works. Im not test it with 9.9 as i change to other (budget) GPU just a few days back.

the AI masking doesn’t work at all

In “CPU mode” everything expected to works. Its good to have for “CPU mode” 32GB system memory, but you have 64GB, its cant be an issue. Of course, runs as “CPU” “speed” (performance).

May worth to check show mask is checked, and so on. Also, may worth to try with other photos (with face(s))

AI masking and add an AI mask, choosing “Faces”

May also try with “Manual” AI masks: selection, area.

Now that’s interesting, I’ve started up PL 9 and the AI masking now works, I’ve checked the settings and my GPU is no longer grayed out.

The only difference between yesterday’s failed attempt and today is that I’ve hibernated my PC and started it up again, though I did close PL9 beforehand and loaded PL 9 again today after waking up my PC.

Strange.

Anyway, there’s little difference in AI masking performance whether the acceleration setting is set to CPU or to my GeForce GTX 1650 Super GPU.

Thanks to all for your feedback.
