@jimh Probably but, here comes a “story”.
@John-M Good at spending other peoples money aren’t you, although the U.K price is currently £1,249.00 (on offer) so not too bad.
But my story
-
Upgraded by adding a RTX 3060 to one of my i7-4790Ks back early in 2023 (replacing a GTX 1050Ti) and was pleased with the improved export times. I already had a Seasonic 550W Platinum power supply and there was no problem there but …
-
Then decided to build a new machine (as you do!?) and moved the 3060 to that. I chose a Ryzen 5600G processor and a motherboard that could take a 5900X, as and when the prices fell, and 32GB of memory and moved the power supply to the new machine and felt that the CPU and GPU were well matched but …
-
Cloned the Operating System SSD, including the drive identity (disk Serial Number) from the i7-4790K and ran into problems with some of the large number of programs that I possessed and that is one of the biggest problems that I encountered with going to a new machine.
-
Abandoned that approach and created new software configurations on the 5600G, there are 3 licences in the PhotoLab Elite package which is useful in such circumstances and took over only software that I considered essential and whose licences would allow installation on that machine. The i7-4790K is still running all the old software.
-
I have since upgraded the 5600G to a 5900X and rebuilt the 5600G with another motherboard, retiring the second i7-4790K in the process.
-
But, it came out of retirement to run the tests I reported here with the 1050Ti card which was slower by 50% with DP XD2s than with DP XD but worked and the 2GB 1050 card which ran into the same problem you encountered, i.e. a 2GB card that is erroneously marked down by PL8 as failing the 1 GB test!?
If you don’t have a lot of software installed on your current machine then go for a new machine.
Cost of my upgrade exercises
- RTX 3030 £329, the newer RTX 4060 was cheaper than that at launch, is a bit faster and needs less power. Please remember that DP X? only requires the power for a shortish period, unlike gaming.
- The Upgrade to a 5600G cost about the same as the graphics card, I already had the case and the Seasonic 550W Platinum power supply.
- The upgrade to the 5900X cost £220 and the RTX 3060 is a bottleneck. But having the power of the 5900X is generally a good thing to have.
- The motherboard and memory for the rehoming of the 5600G cost about £200 but I then upgraded the CPU Cooler for £24.
- I had already upgraded the i7-4790K so it had a Seasonic 550W Platinum power supply(mostly because they are quiet and “sip” power when they are idle)
- I then bought a 650W Seasonic Platinum Power supply which actually went into the 5900X and its power supply went into the 5600G!
- Since then I have purchased 2 x RTX 2060 GPUs from Ebay for about £110 each and they are now in the i7-4790K and the 5600G.
So should I have ever upgraded beyond just buying and fitting the RTX 3060 to my i7-4790K. Arguably, for PhotoLab, the 5600G with the RTX3060 was a balanced combination and for PhotoLab alone the 5900X was an upgrade too far, but don’t tell my wife.
PS:- For users in the UK this seems a “bargain”, I just got a push mail from Ebuyer advertising the 4060Ti model but this 4070 offers a lot (not sure about Win 11 Home but…)
