Hallo, ich bin neu hier im Forum. Seit der Version PL 5 arbeite ich inzwischen auf einem Mac Studio bzw. MacBook Pro M4 Pro. Es wurden mit viel Arbeit ca 80.000 Fotos verschlagwortet und ca 40.000 Fotos Projekten zugeordnet. Nach dem Update auf PL 9 wurde die Datenbank wie üblich migriert. Leider sind seither die Pfade zu allen Fotos die in sehr vielen Projekten verteilt liegen, gelöscht. Die Projektnamen selbst sind noch vorhanden und auch die Dateinamen der Fotos werden angezeigt, allerdings nicht der Pfad zu den Fotos, so dass anstatt Bild nur ein Fragezeichen erscheint. Der DxO-Support konnte mir nicht wirklich helfen. Laut deren Aussage muss ich für jedes Bild den Pfad korrigieren. Das ist deshalb eine Monsterarbeit, weil die Fotos in den Projekten sehr verstreut in verschiedenen Pfaden liegen. Für mich bedeutet das, dass ich die Bildverwaltung mit PL 9 aufgeben muss. Denn niemand konnte mir zusichern, dass dies bei einem erneuten Upgrade nicht wieder passiert.
Hat jemand ein ähnliches Problem?

Other than that, PhotoLab is not very robust in respect to asset management as you have found in a rather painful way…and I hope that you have an up-to-date backup of your previous version of PL’s database. If you do, I propose to try this, assuming that you had PL8:
- open PL8 and check if projects are intact
- from the file menu, create a backup and store it e.g. the Desktop
- quit PL8
- open PL9
- from the file menu, restore the database from the backup you just created
- projects should have returned, together with the proper images.
I just tested this with PL9 build 21 and it worked, got no question mark previews.
Please note that restoring the backup resets all you did in PL9 so far. But maybe that loss is less painful than having to arrange the 40k images.
Best practice: When using PL as an asset manager, make sure that you back up the database regularly. Never ever start something new without those backups.
Because File/asset Management in DxO is very limited I’m using Imatch as DAM. For sure, IT IS some more € to spent but Imatch meets all my expectations and more. In DxO I’m doing just raw and post processing, nothing else .
PS: Not Sure If Imatch ist available for Äpfel.
Vielen Dank für die ausführliche Nachricht. Leider hatte ich vor dem Upgrade auf PL 9 kein Backup deer Datenbank gemacht. PL 9 hat die vorhandene Datenbank dann importiert und auch in PL 8 habe ich jetzt das gleiche Problem. Ich werde vermutlich auf eine Alternative Bildverwaltung umsteigen wie z.B. Excire.
Mir ist es zu riskant, noch einmal eine zerstörte Projektdatenbank zu bekommen. Die Verschlagwortung ist erhalten.

For every version of PhotoLab, there should be a separate folder with a dedicated database. While PL9 imports the DB of PL8 during its first opening, the database of PL8 stays untouched - at least on my Mac.
Time Machine backups…? Any chance you don’t back up? 
I’d not give up so easily the 40k associations of Photos to projects. But you need to keep cool and never ever change (move, rename…) things in your photo archive. That will definitely drive the DB over the cliff!
Vielen Dank für die Information. Über ein älteres Backup habe ich noch die PL 8 Datenbank. Leider bleibt der Pfad zu den Bildern gelöscht. PL 9 zeigt mir sämtliche Metadaten und Details zu den Fotos, lediglich der Pfad ist nicht mehr vorhanden. Auch mit dem eingespielten Backup in die (versteckte) Library. Der Support hat mir empfohlen die Pfade neu zu vergeben für alle Projektfotos. Das ist nicht zumutbar. Ich werde auf eine alternative Bildverwaltung umsteigen. Der technische Support von DxO hat sehr “sparsam” auf mein Problem reagiert.
A nice way to say that, given the situation, support is effectively helpless. If you still have earlier versions of PL, you could check when the paths were lost and then try to transport the intact allocations.
I’ve used Lightroom since V1 and never lost anything, except for the things I did out of foolishness or boldness. For the price of a user account, you can use Adobe Bridge and Lightroom’s Library module for free - according to what I read in this forum. Both solutions have been around for a long time and include tools that can check the catalog for missing (deleted, renamed or moved) files. Lightroom shows images even if the files are offline while Bridge doesn’t seem do that. Whether you want/trust Adobe or not is your decision, and there are other managers out there. Be sure to check “recovery” mechanisms before you invest in re-allocating nn thousands of your images though.
Vielen Dank für Ihre freundliche Antwort! Von Adobe habe ich Abstand genommen. Es gab sehr schlechte Erfahrungen mit dem Kundenservice von Adobe als ich noch mit Indesign, Acrobat, Elements undnLightroom gearbeitet habe. Nach einem Rechnerwechsel konnte ich Acrobat nicht mehr aktivieren und der Kundenservice hat mir lediglich angeboten ein neues Abo abzuschließen. Ich will keine Abo-Modelle im Stile von Adobe. Es gibt auch Hersteller von Software, die gegen eine geringfügige jährliche “Wartungsgebühr” die jeweils aktuelle Version zur Verfügiung stellen.
Und für die Bildverwaltung habe ich mir jetzt Excire genauer angesehen und das Programm erfüllt alle meine Kriterien. Die Datenbank von Excire habe ich parallel auf verschiedenen Medien automatisiert gesichert. DxO werde ich als Bildbearbeitung behalten, lediglich die Verwaltung lasse ich ungenutzt. Und die kZusammenarbeit mit Excire funktioniert gut.
