"Oly colors" or old camera effect

I like everything in the second row more than in first row

The first row is the processing of Olympus ORF (RAW) file on PC by Olympus Master software ( or OM Workspace - they do identical histogram )

The second row is the processing of Olympus ORF (RAW) file inside camera, SP-500UZ

Camera has TruePic Turbo image processor and both programs are supposed to emulate it.

My guess is that inside camera software is very limited in resources so they use more primitive mathematical functions to approximate something like histogram. As a result colors look more “harmonic“ for me.

I understand that PC version is more “true“ and “accurate“.

But anyway - is it possible to tune Photolab or Olympus software to imitate the same effect like inside old camera ?

Yes, you can get very close but I have never achieved 100%

In PL, I created a custom preset that emulates the Olympus jpeg. It produces an image that is very very close to OOC jpeg. However, there are very subtle differences depending on lighting, exposure and the colour temperature of the scene. I.E. there are variables.

To create it, I placed the OOC photo on my second monitor and adjusted the image PL was showing to produce the same result - excluding sharpening etc.

My preset is based on an Adobe DCP for my camera model and uses the Adobe rendering curve. I also adjusted the HSL for saturation and Blue tone.

You can get the free Adobe DCP files, I believe, by installing their free DNG converter. I have an old version of Photoshop and used those DCP files.

Here are some comparisons. The left image is PL9, right is OOC jpeg.

Allan,

Thank you for your optimistic answer and good photos.

I tried to understand what is “Adobe DCP“ and Copilot directed me to the list of cameras supported by Adobe. Is says that Olympus SP-500UZ is not supported.

DxO does not support RAW for this camera too.

Some people suggested to extract firmware from camera but I don’t know whether it is possible even in theory.

So what I have now is OM Workspace and Olympus Master 2 that can read ORF files and provides some tools to edit them
