Noticeable lag after moving images to external SSD

Hey all, I wonder if I can get some advice.

I’m running PL8 and everything has been perfectly fine so far with my editing. However, yesterday I copied all of my images over from an external USB drive, to a new 6TB external SSD.

Today, trying to edit images from that SSD in PL8, and things are noticeably laggier. I’ve even disabled ‘High Quality Previews’, but this doesn’t really seem to make much difference. I’m seeing the majority of the lagging when using masks.

I wonder if there’s something going on with the settings, or something else that I can’t think of. I’m sure it’s not placebo, but something is going on.

Any thoughts?

You may notice a lag while PL indexes the new disk on first loading.

Well it’s definitely not indexing anything. Or doesn’t seem to be, at least.

So, a little while later, there is nothing taking place in Photolab and yet it is definitely laggy. When I moved from the HHD to the SSD, I simply cloned my photos folder from one drive to the other. Are there files residing somewhere that shouldn’t be there, or is it trying to reference the other hard drive somehow?

I should say that this is most noticeable when editing in a mask. Pulling up a new image from a folder, and tweaking the exposure settings, everything is fine. Masks seem to be an issue

How is the speed when viewing the images wit an image browser like IrfanView.?

How is the SSD connected? Anything but but a dedicated channel of thunderbolt 4/5 or USB3 gen 3+ will be slower than internal SATA

Some PC like mine stationary has a lot of USB-slots but not all of them are fast.

It’s odd, though. I did the same thing (with a significantly smaller SSD – 512GB) and I noticed an increase in performance.
