New PhotoLab 8 vs old Optics Pro Elite 10

I do use Optics Pro Elite 10 as one and only raw editing software. Besides the usual “simple” corrections I’d value features like

  • Prime Noise Reduction
  • Clear View
  • SmartLighning
  • Camera+Lens modules
  • Colour Correction with its camera related features
  • sometimes the Colour Correction with film packs
  • all of the presets
  • geometrical corrections
  • cutting for a fitting image section
    the most.

As I think the software might be quite outdated, I think about getting an up to date version of DxO software. But because of my budget I’d buy only DxO PhotoLab8.

So here are my questions:
Which major new features I will benefit from?
Which features I will lose because they are moved to e.g. DxO ViewPoint and aren’t part of PhotoLab anymore?

The first question for us to ask you is what platform are you running on, Mac or Windows, and what Mac or Windows operating system are you using. Since you are using such an old version I am trying to ascertain whether your current hardware and operating system will even run PhotoLab 8 Elite. The next question is what graphics card are you using, which will impact your ability to run the latest noise reduction algorithms.

You also indicate “sometimes the Colour Correction with film packs”. Does that mean you also have a FilmPack license or was FilmPack part of Optics Pro 10? I have owned a FilmPack license for years, but if I recall correctly there are some basic film emulations with PhotoLab even without a FilmPack license.

After Optics Pro 10 there was an Optics Pro 11 and 8 versions of PhotoLab with version 9 due this fall. Optics Pro 10 was released in 2014. There have been 10 newer versions since then including the soon to be released PhotoLab 9 . Over all this time there have been many dozens of new features and feature upgrades with more to come this autumn. Assuming your computer is up to the task of running PhotoLab 8 Elite it would be best for you to download the 30 day trial to see for yourself whether it meets your needs.

Keep in mind that PhotoLab 9 will be available in the next couple of months so while you can trial PhotoLab 8 now, I would put off purchasing it and wait for PhotoLab 9 to be released. Also understand that because you haven’t upgraded since Optics Pro 10, you will not be entitled to any discounts or upgrade pricing. From DxO’s point of view you would essentially be regarded as a new user. You might want to consider upgrading with Black Friday discounts in November.

Check out the respective user guides for details. Watch for differences, taking care to compare features of Elite editions in both versions.

Why upgrade, if Optics Pro still runs on your PC and you’re happy with the features you get, no matter whether the app is almost 10 years old or not?

If you have to replace your hardware and/or OS or want a recent camera, OP10 might show its age with lack of support or DxO modules and then, you’d probably want to wait and trial PhotoLab 9 due to be published in September or October. And for tight budgets, getting a bundle or Black Friday discount might be worth the wait.

Its a Windows computer and I do not expect problems with the requirements.

Indeed, I want to buy a new camera. So, support with the outdated software might be an aspect, too. Anyhow, supporting a company/software by spending money is another thing I have in mind.

But my concern is, that I have to buy not only PhotoLab to have at least the same features that I do have now. And to be honest, the pages centered around PL8 do not show much else what my old software is also able to do. What I noticed is the ability to local editing (which is a good new and very usefull feature).

I came here for a short “yes, its definitly worth an upgrade, because…”. Anyhow, where can I find these in-detail user guides?
