New DXO user, slightly disappointed with library performance

Hello all, I’m new to dxo and just bought PL8 and FP7 after trialing for a few weeks.

Coming from LR and more recently (last 4 years) On1 photoraw.

I’ve just discovered the photo library does not do what I expected and didn’t think to test before I bought the software: I can’t move folders within the library.

It’s not a big issue but it is annoying to have to go to the mac finder to move a folder from one place to another.

I’m really pleased with the image quality improvement I can get over on1 but there are a few niggles. I expect I’ll find a few more.

I think it is one of the long outstanding differences between the Mac and Windows version, not at my Mac at the moment. I don’t find it a huge issue though it is annoying. I have not tested it on PL8, guess I have just got used to it. Have you considered the project folders, you can drag those about.

The editing functionality in PL is excellent. Coming from Lightroom or On1, I think unfortunately the Photolab asset management capabilities will disappoint you time and time again. Just personal preference if those pains are worth the great editing tools.

Agree.

PhotoLibrary’s limitations do not facilitate my workflow to “move” images and folders from a “working” folder to a “completed” folder when done processing a set. I’m on a PC.

My workflow is to bring the folder with the day’s images off my sd card to my ‘pending’ folder on my homescreen. I go into my photosoftware, look at the images, rate and select for deletion, give keywords etc. then delete the dross and move the folder into the appropriate month folder (inside the year folder).

I use project/album folders for specific club competitions and ongoing things like portraits, landscapes etc.

@Pentaxowner There are potentially (at least) two problems with my test

  1. I am a Windows user and I am not sure that the command I am using is actually available on the Mac!?
  2. I have a test of the workflow you described and it may not come close enough to yours to be an accurate test.

Plus the method relies upon “drag and drop” and that may actually be impractical on your machine, if that command actually exists on the Mac!?

So I created a “Pending” folder containing some images, all of which I selected and put into a named project.

I then “culled” 3 images at random which the ‘Project’ tracked successfully

so at this point both the ‘Pending’ folder and the ‘Project’ still share the same images.

The next step relies on the Shift drag & drop routine, and this may not be available on the Mac, and can be downright difficult to execute on any machine depending on how far the images have to be dragged!

I have complained to DxO in the past that there should also be menu items but there are no Ctrl C, Ctrl V, Ctrl X commands nor any menu items so with DxPL(Win) we only have

image

So after the Shift Drag & drop I have

In “Pending”, now empty ready for the next images from the SD card.

In ‘Projects’, the links to the moved images remain intact

In the Target directory now the custodian of the images on disk and in the database

Changing the directory name in DxPL also leaves the ‘Project’ links intact.

Please note that dragging and dropping directories is not possible with DxPL(Win) so the only way to move a directory is to create a new one at the required location and then Shift drag and drop the contents from the old to the new!

Thank you for the time invested. I’ll take a closer look at this.

Thanks
