In Nik Collection 9, I noticed that blend modes can now be used in addition to each filter’s adjustment parameters. However, none of the built-in filter presets appear to make use of, or demonstrate the benefits of, these new blend mode options.
Is DxO planning to update the built-in presets to incorporate blend modes where appropriate? For example, I’ve found that Normal or Luminosity often work well with Pro Contrast, while Color Burn at a lower opacity (around 20–30%) can produce excellent results with Polarization and Tonal Contrast in certain situations.
I’ve learned a great deal about using Nik filters by studying the presets created by the DxO team. It would be great to see blend mode best practices incorporated into these presets so users can better understand when and why a particular blend mode was chosen.
I’m also curious what other users have discovered. Are there particular blend modes that you consistently use—or avoid—with specific Nik filters?
