Modify preset preview to show all preset names

Depending on how many presets there are, the respective panel is not tall enough to show the name of the last row (see screen capture below)

This could be remedied by a) making the panel slightly taller or b) shifting the preset names up a little bit.

As seen in DPL7 on macOS 14.7 on 5k iMac 2019.

Note: Also sent as ticket to DxO support.

Thanks for sending the ticket. I have many custom presets and three rows not quite fitting has been a small annoyance.

Generally, I think all the tool panels could do with being compacted by removing unnecessary vertical spacing.

Or the last 100 rows. You can scroll down.
I don’t understand your request.

George

The list can be long, scrolling down is time-consuming when images are displayed for those who use a lot of partial presets and is very counter-productive.
Probably not your workflow.

User defined shortcuts for assigning (partial) presets would be a nice implementation too.

The list is long and exist out off 4 columns. Resizing the program window resizes the content based on the horizontal size. The vertical size is following. If the window covers an exact amount of rows then you’ll see complete elements: image and text. But that is dependent on the window size.
@platypus wants to see whole elements.

George

PS.
It’s the same behavior as the image browser or the file browser.

I always use my programs fullscreen sized. And preset windows is not resizable alone (PL8 Win).

There is the preset editor window which only shows list and allow to apply presets, but it is either on the left part of the screen in customize mode, which I generally keep closed because I need the largest possible main window but interface is not designed for convenient full screen use of this main window - and F9 shortcut which anytime opens both side annoys me - (I have 2 screens on my stations as about any graphic software users have since most professionnal softwares allow to put pallets on one screen and main window on an other, and allow to apply about any function or to open about any tool with user defined keyboard shortcuts).
Or it can be moved on the right side, but needs to not use tabs on this side to be seen, which I find less convenient than using tabs.

Anyway, in any case applying those presets requires lot of mouse clics and movements, when keyboards shortcuts would be instantaneous.

One click to select the “apply preset” button, the mouse wheel to view the possibilities and another click to select.

George

DxO support has transmitted the request to the respective team - according to an email I got today.

you forgot some steps :

With menu as it is now :

  • turn your eyes from the image to the button “Apply preset”
  • move your mouse to the button
  • clic the button
  • mouse wheel

[ option :

  • eventually move your mouse again to a sub-category
  • clic to open sub-category

end option ]

  • look around to see which preset or partial preset to choose
  • move your mouse on this preset
  • clic on this preset
  • turn your eyes again and see change
  • DONE

if you want to compare with an other partial preset do all this again and maybe again.

With keyboard shortcut :

no need to move your eyes when you’re used to using keyboard shortcuts.

  • keyboard shortcut and see instant change
  • DONE

enventually do this again instantly several time to choose and see instant change with different partial presets without taking your eyes off the image.

It seems that you’re not really used to working with keyboard shortcuts, except perhaps sporadically.

When I train people to use graphics software (I sometimes do training on 3d softwares), I force them to use keyboard shortcuts right from the start (it’s very difficult to break the habit of clicking in menus or icons in a software once it’s acquired).

And I can assure you that those who fully work with keyboard shortcuts are much faster than those who work only with the mouse going all around the screen(S!).

While I use keyboards shortcuts often, you present the selection of a preset using a mouse as if it was an arduous task. In my experience, it isn’t.

Whatever we think of it, I’d appreciate if the name of visible previews would be visible too

I’m not ! It is of course not.
I would like to have a full set of customizable keyboard shortcuts (for any function and any tool) because I know how faster it is possible to work when you do not have to move mouse all around one or more screens to call functions and tools and when you can keep your eyes on your work rather than on the interface to open tools. (When all this is implemented the right way).

And I replied to @George about preset keybord shortcuts because he does not think that this would be valuable.
Be able to jump from preset to preset (full or partial) instantly without taking your eyes off the picture would really more efficient way faster than opening “menu” and “submenus” to get desire function.

Sorry, I don’t know how I read your request, but I thought you were asking to be able to have a list of names without the preview images for easier access to the preset lists when they get long. Hence my suggestion.
I understand it sound strange …

The list elements have a fixed size in pixels depending on the window, and the panel size. Scrolling is done in monitor rows. It’s normal behaviour.

George

Yes, but somehow, things can get odd:

  • the panel accommodates 12 previews in landscape orientation, but the names of the last four presets are cut off.
  • In portrait, we get 4 complete previews and 4 that are ± cut in half
  • depending on which group is selected, the previews need scrolling anyways.
  • most built-in preset groups contain 12 presets or less (no scrolling needed)

@StevenL
Imagine we’d make a panel to fit 2 rows of 6 in portrait and 3 rows of 4 in landscape orientation . Add a list of tabs on top (or bottom) to switch groups…and we’d get a config that needs no scrolling for groups of 12 presets. Those who have zillions of presets will have to figure out how to manage their crowd, and they’ll want/need to scroll. A configuration like of the “film strip” of the photo library module could do the trick though.Recycle that code…!

Playing with the film strip in the photo library module you get the same behaviour: partly shown items. In the customize module it’s different. But even then you’ll see a partly item at both the ends.
I always and still wonder why that difference.

Perhaps what would be more useful is to allow us to reorder the presets in the windows, if not individually, then choosing to put user-created presets at the top? Right now, my own created presets are lumped in with General Purpose presets, which is in the top category, but if a person has a bunch of custom presets, it might be nice to have that as its own category at the top. I do not know if there’s a way to create your own “Landscape” preset and drop it into the “Portrait and Landscape” category, or even if I’d want to put it there.

On Windows, you can do this, but not within PL. You must use File Explorer to find and then edit the names of the preset files. For example, by prefixing them with a number, so they are listed in the order you want.

As @stuck said use a number → e.g. 0, 01. 001 …

and so it was carried over to the new PL version
(of course you have to try them then)

Creat a group and drag an drop your own and favorite presets on it.

Easy way: Preset and preset group folders can be renamed with Finder and DPL will pick up the changes with its next start. I suppose that DPL for Windows can do/handle that too.
