Missing Features / Relink & Export Options

Dear all,
We are coming from Capture One because the relationship with customers is wrong. Now using it with large photo database we’re missing two important features:

  • Ability to relink huge set of photos when you have moved them.
  • Export options allowing to use the name of the album and/or other tags for folders naming.

These are the main things we’re missing but they’re preventing us from migrating from Capture One.

The rest is amazing and it’s a great software!

Welcome to the forum, @yebay

The following proposals relate to a migration mainly, but can be used occasionally when need arises. Many more ideas and procedures can be found by searching the forum. Reading posts also helps to access more features of the forum.

“Relink after move”

  • Assuming the presence of up-to-date metadata in files or .xmp sidecars
→ select, in PhotoLab, the root of your photo archive
→ from the context menu, select the indexing option and wait until done

“Export to folders, the names of which contain metadata””

  • No such feature available in PhotoLab 9 and earlier
→ work around this limitation with search, filter and/or project features of PL
→ search the forum and have a look at the manual, or search the internet

Things to consider

  • If you use C1 as an asset manager, you might have to rethink how you’ll go about this in PL. Imo, PL isn’t very robust and can’t handle work done on more than one computer without good preparation and discipline.
  • If you organise files mostly by folder structure, the current state of PL in asset management might be sufficient.
  • PL’s correction technology is robust, if your gear is supported. Updates for new gear can take some time though. If your gear is supported AND you want PL’s optical and noise handling, consider using PL as a preprocessor or external editor.
  • Adding to PL licenses for FilmPack and ViewPoint makes PL a more complete package. Without these licenses, a few features aren’t accessible, e.g. luminosity masking, flipping an image and more
  • DxO provides “Elite” and “Essential” editions. Trials use “Elite”.
  • Perpetual vs. subscription: Compare your yearly cost, specially if you use new gear regularly
  • Every day operations: Back up the database and app installers.
