Metadata: IPTC and GPS-data missing on JPEG after export

Yes there is a little mess concerning where IPTC are really written and read by different application. The reason I discussed the matter of source metadata when updating via the File-menu (Metadata and read from file) is just the fact that i saw in XnView that the files lacking IPTC-data after export had that data in the embedded XMP of those JPEG-files.

I haven´t seen what Brian experienced yet and I will not because I can´t use Wide gamut in Photolab with these files because my final images are converted to sepia and Wide Gamut can´t handle that without fucking up the color tones!

All my exports are done with digitally born Sony ARW and there I have no problem converting to Wide from Classic.

The only situation where I have experienced problem with metadata exports before have been when I have made virtual copies before I have added metadata in PM Plus. In that case the master have got metadata earlier at the exports but have lacked metadata in the JPEG-files exported from those virtual copies, which is fully logical. In this new case I had metadata on all RAW before export and have not one single virtual copy and despite that I got no IPTC-data in the exported files. Of some reason Photolab seems to ignore the IPTC-namespace in XMP where that metadata is stored in this faulty exports.

I will try to make a deinstall and install version 6. instead and after that install version 6 and reinstall 7 and make a new test tomorrow.

Thank you so much for your kind help friends. I much appreciate that.

I didn’t read everything but what I know is 1) PL copies the keywords from the xmp section in a new RAW file to the database and 2) it doesn’t update the database based on a changed keyword from another program and 3) PL doesn’t read the iptc section in the RAW file.
You might check this by copy the file to a new directory and test it. A new directory means a new file.

I’m not really surprised if they are not supporting classic IPTC but they ought to of compatibility reasons sins some programs still seem to depend on classic IPTC.

It really is a problem with IPTC when we really can’t be sure whether it is the IPTC in the IPTC namespace of XMP or the classic IPTC that is written or read when it gets displayed in the IPTC fields in the UI of the various applications.

I know PM Plus is “forking” IPTC as I have rigged it and I know Photolab doesn’t and just that fact ought to keep users from using a bidiectional flow between PM Plus or other software that maintains even Classic IPTC. I can definitely see that a software like XnView that handle both classic and XMP-embedded IPTC looses the classic IPTC when Photolab updates the JPEG-files.
