Menu access first time click reaction lags 6-8 seconds after opening PL8

I’m running PL8 on windows 11 (both updated to the latest version).
Each time when I open the PL8 application, the first menu access response is delayed by about 6-8 seconds. After that, all menu accesses go smooth as should be.

With menu accesses, I mean e.g. these:

  • Clicking the “RAW white balans setting” select box
  • Clicking the “crop aspect ratio” select box
  • Clicking the “View” menu name in the menu bar

Does anyone experienced the same observation and/or has a cure?

Many thanks,
Peter

Hi there.
I have a couple of questions.
What’s the resolution of the raw photo?
Where is it stored?

The RAW photo is 25 Mpixels (Panasonic G9M2). My pictures are stored on an external Samsung T9 SSD connected with a 20Gbit/s USB interface.
The picture to be processed opens immediately, but its unclear so far why the first button click takes that long.
I looked to Windows 11 issues already (could not pinpoint any issue so far), butPL8 is the only program that shows this issue
My processor is a 13th gen i7, equipped with 32 GB memory.

Wild guess answer…

  • The picture opens ‘immediately’ because all PL is doing is showing you the JPEG that’s embedded in the RAW file. The first click takes a long time because PL is taking an age to load the actual RAW data.

From other topics on this forum, accessing files on an external drive doesn’t seem to be good idea.

Have you tried copying a file onto the local disk and editing it in PL from there/

Yet I have 26mp fuji x raw files and they open just fine via an external drive - but on M4 Mac but ok previously on M1 Mac

OK but have you tried opening a file that reveals this lag from your local drive?

I have the same behavior for pictures on my internal SSD. As I said, it happens only once after opening PL8. When I process other pictures, there is no lag as long PL8 stays open. Even when I open PL8, load a picture and wait a few minutes, the first click experiences the lag.

I understand what you are talking about - mouse click actions, not waiting for pictures to render. The only lag I experience is when switching between Photo Library and Customize (1-2 seconds) and when switching between photos (a cache bug). Menu actions are instantaneous for me from the very beginning when I start PL8. (Win 11 23H2 fully updated, nVidia RTX 3080, AMD Ryzen 7 CPU)

Your problem could be due to hardware. See if any messages are appearing in your system log or application log in Windows Event Viewer when the problem happens. Also run Windows Resource Manager to see what the CPU and memory systems are doing. You can also contact DxO support and try to debug what PhotoLab is doing during those delays.

The most important at this point in time is to learn whether other people experience the same problem. If not, it migth be one way or another a flaw in my installation.

OK, I did say my idea was a wild guess.
