Hope you’re all having a good day. Happy election day to those of you in the USA.
I normally wait until an OS is mature (ie I update it in August, just before Apple release the next version!) before updating. However, this year I am very interested in the Apple AI functionality that will be available here in the UK some time in December. The text summarisation and writing style options are particularly appealing for emails and documents.
Stating the obvious though, it is essential for me that the OS and PL play nicely together, and if this isn’t the case then PL ranks higher than new AI tools for me at the moment and I would hold off updating the OS.
I’ve seen in a couple of other threads that @ryendry has had issues with LA not working properly. Has anyone else had this problem, has it been resolved with any recent updates to PL and/or Sequoia, or is this an issue that only ryendry has unfortunately experienced?
Has any one had any other issues with PL running on macOS Sequoia?
Hi CHPhoto
I have raised a ticket with support and they have replicated my problem and they are working on a fix but can’t give a date. The trial of PL8 as ended and I have reverted to PL7 ( I would like to upgrade to PL8 but not prepared to gamble until they confirm a fix ) There as been an update to PL and Sequoia since this problem manifested itself
and so far PL7 appears to be working ok !! There is a problem though in that PL7 will not load the .dops for work done in PL8 I am informed by support that sidecars are not backward compatible!! something to remember if using a free trial !!
Indeed and that’s why one should always test with disposable copies of your image files.
If the number of spoilt images with v8 .dop files is manageable, you could do one of the following things:
Recommended: restore the respective fies or folders from a backup
Hack: edit the .dop files and change the version numbers. Here’s an extract of such a file as seen in BBEdit and the version numbers correspond to PL version 7.10
CAVEAT: While changing the version numbers lets PL7 open PL8 sidecars, the settings you’ll get are the ones from your test, not the ones from before your test.
Thank you Platypus fortunately I only used PL8 as a trial and mentioned the .dops because I had not encountered the backwards compatibility before. The original RAWS load fine anyway .
I am using a Mac 2021. M1 chip and Sequoia 15.1 PL7 Elite 7.1 build 66 and free trial PL8.
As already stated support have replicated the bug but not a fix as yet. I am curious to see if anyone else is having a problem on this set up.
Thanks everyone for your responses. It’s looking very positive regarding updating to MacOS Sequoia and PL running smoothly.
I’m still using PL7, and I’ll likely update to PL8 during Black Friday. After assessing PL8 I’d decided to hold off until PL9 to update (although I did like PL8 a lot, each update is so incremental that for me I can wait for every other release), but I too hadn’t considered that the dop files wouldn’t be backwards compatible and I edited some work for clients with PL8 that I now can’t load because my trial has expired (thankfully the clients are happy and nothing urgent is required).
Apple AI doesn’t launch in the UK until Dec so I’m going to wait until Feb/Mar '25 before updating MacOS just to be on the cautious side. AI seems like a major addition to the OS which to me makes it feel it has greater potential to break something.
I’m also still a little concerned by the bug @ryendry encountered and the fact that DxO can replicate it. I don’t fancy being another person who encounters it, I use LA all the time.
Edit: FYI, I use a Mac Mini M1, 8Gb memory, 512Gb storage and external SSD drives for storing work.
