Apple is releasing new kit next week. Don’t know what.
My advice is ignore the rumors and wait a week to have more options.
16GB RAM is the bare minimum for AI. I recommend 32GB unless you’re a hobbyist. You may get by now, but Photolab 10 will have more advanced AI tools that may demand more power (currently AI is seemingly trying to drain the world’s energy resources).
My future-proof recommendation is at a minimum M4/32GB/2TB. That’s my current Mac mini and I dare say 9.5 flies on it. I’m masking as fast as I can edit, not thinking about to AI mask or not - just editing (as it should be).
PL 9.5 currently works just fine even with extensive AI masking on an M2 MacBook Air with 8GB. Pretty snappy, too. That is currently what I use when travelling, and no, and I am not a hobbyist My main system has an M4 chip with more memory, but I find that quite adequate and have had zero issues with it to date. Been around computers long enough to know there is no such thing as future proofing them… we used to think 64kb of memory or a 10MB hard drive did that!
That’s odd. It must be a UK-specific (or non-US specific) thing. Because no matter what configuration I choose, there’s no option not to have a power adapter included.
I understand the logic with iPhones (any phone) because somehow we just end up with so many of those chargers. I guess because they’re cheap.
But with a laptop, I don’t think I’ve ever held on to a charger for one before. It’s kind of “married” to the device. When I get rid of the laptop, the charger goes with it.
Sucks to have to buy it at extra cost, especially when the rest of the world gets the device at the same price with the charger.
Yes, same in my household. And some last better than others, don’t they?
My wife and I both recently got new laptops, Lenovo supplied a charger and Microsoft didn’t. Our phones, which are both a couple of years old now didn’t come with chargers either.
We have now both got a 3rd party charger which has multiple usb ports, which is handy when travelling (either individually or together) because we only need to take one charger - we just need to take enough cables!
The charger is also useful when charging the children’t iPads overnight - only one plug socket is used and both devices are found in the same place.
Anker and uGreen offer chargers with multiple usb ports with up to 140W I believe.
PL 8 zipped on an M3 Air with 16 Gb RAM. With the upgrade to PL 9 (32 Gb RAM recommended), processing was noticeably slower, but still perfectly manageable for an amateur. But PL 10 will, I think, be out of the question. So I would consider 32 Gb RAM as the minimum.
I ordered the same as you on Day 1: The M5 Pro chip with 48 GB and 1 TB of storage. The only “bump” from the Pro configuration I ordered was the added memory.
My existing MacBook Pro is an M1 with 16/512 and it runs DxO wonderfully. Export is a tad slow and I cannot preview noise reduction, so I’m curious to see if that changes. And I haven’t yet learned how to use the auto mask function, so that will be interesting to take advantage of.
I logged in to try to find out if DxO intends an M5 Pro optimization release. I’d even settle for an optimisation. Z or S, I don’t care. (Ok, I’m not sure how US humor translates to Britain but give me a point for trying.)
Just FYI, the 16” M5 MacBook Pro Max with what looks to be a fully max-ed out configuration, is available in-store at some US Costcos for US$4500 (and for delivery as well).
