Not knowing the technical processing of DXO, I would think that batch processing would be better served by the M4Pro. This chip offers significantly improved performance due to more neural engines and higher RAM. All reviews highlight this difference. Of course, your use other than DXO is mort important. My recommendation…achetez le M4Pro.
Thanks Jon, I thought DXO mainly uses the Neural Engine when denoising, but I’m not sure. Because the amount of NE is the same on the M4 and the M4 PRO… Thanks for your answer anyway
I use a 2020 M1 MacBook Air and it has easily enough power for any active editing.
Export profits from Neural Engines, specially for power-hungry functions like de-noising. If cost matters, I’d spend it on RAM and drive space and before buying more expensive CPUs.
Thanks Platypus, just a follow-up question: on my mac mini (intel I7), I notice a delay of 2 to 3 seconds when I edit the image (for example, 5 to 6 seconds are necessary before the image is clear after a slight modification of the white balance. Are the modifications instantaneous with a basic M1?
Yes, they are.
Is your mini equipped with solid state or spinning platter drive?
BTW: The PRO model can be necessary if you want to max RAM and Drive space.
(The current Mini with M4 gets you a max. of 32GB/2TB vs 64GB/8TB@Pro)
Maybe I used the wrong term. The CPU and GPU cores are significantly different with the M4 Pro greater and superior. This may have a significant impact on the throughput of DXO doing batch processing. Definitely will take advantage of Apple’s AI as it matures. M4 will not. Sorry if not clear.
I currently use an 2021 M1 MacBook Pro and PureRaw4 runs just fine. I’ve batched process over 300 Nikon Z8 RAW images and walked away. Always takes much less time than estimated.
I have the non-Pro version and it copes perfectly, both with PL8 and Topaz Photo AI.
Il utilise le neural engine, un M4 de base est amplement suffisant.
I used PL7 on an M1 MacBook Pro. Just a plain M1 with only 16 GB of RAM. It was perfectly usable.
I now have an M4 Pro, but the only reason it’s a Pro is because I wanted 4 TB of internal SSD and that means I needed the Pro.
The speed upgrade of the Neural engine between M1 and M4 is astonishing. There are still only 16 cores, but they are way faster.
For higher numbers of ANEs, we’d need a computer with “ultra” processors.
Mac Studio has these. Maxed out, it’ll cost around 15k.
Thanks everyone for this valuable information. I will now move on to a basic M4, increasing the RAM and SSD capacity.
Think about an external SSD via USB-C instead of paying Apple for internal disk space. That’s what I use and can’t see any noticeable slow down
