Leica V-Lux typ 114 support

Hi!

I’m writing to ask for support for the Leica V-lux typ 114 camera.

Its sister camera, the Panasonic FZ1000 (same model, same lens, but different branding) is already supported. I tried modifying the EXIF file of my “rwl” files (Leica Vlux) to match the Maker and Model of the FZ100 files (.rw2 file format) using ExifTool.
It somehow works, but the images appear pinkish, and no lens distortion correction is applied.
Nonetheless, adding a new module should be quick for DxO devs, as this is the same lens, same sensor etc. I guess some value in the files are just not at the exact place between rwl and rw2.

Hence my request: would it be doable to properly supported the Vlux typ 114 ?
I know it’s not a recent camera, but the whole purpose of DxO Photolab is also to make old ones shine…

Thanks a lot and looking forward to hearing from you

This is primarily a user site although DxO staff sometimes post here. I would be very surprised if DxO added support for a 10 year old discontinued camera. However, you can ask for support at this site: Appareils supportés - DxO

Thanks for your answer!
I’ve seen @Marie from DxO replying here from time to time. I already asked for support using the link a few months ago but to no avail, so I thought I’d try here as well.

Old discontinued camera indeed, but that shouldn’t be that much work if you consider that the Vlux is the exact same camera as the FZ1000 - just with a different file format - that DxO actually support, with the Leica C-Lux typ 112 for example.
Of note, changing the Exif of Vlux files to simulate a C-Lux works pretty great, with accurate colors and optical corrections, but not all zoom focal lenghts are supported).

It doesn’t matter what this camera is similar to. DxO would need to acquire a like new copy of it to test. If they haven’t felt the need to do it after all these years, it is unlikely that they will be interested in making the effort now.

Hello @prmortimer ,

I’ve noted the Leica V-Lux typ 114 in the old cameras to support list.
In 2025 we will be able to deal with this list as we work on improving our processes.

Hi @Marie ! Merci beaucoup
As a huge fan of DxO this matters.
For now I cope with 1/ faking the RWL into thinking it’s a Panasonic LZ1000 using ExifTool, 2/ then converting to DNG (using Camera Raw 2.6 and later). (of note, converting to TIFF could work as well)

Nonetheless, using DxO natively would be greatly appreciated!

— EDIT UPDATE - see post below for a perfect file tweaking.

Latest news !
After spending a bit of time following my request, I think I found a way to perfectly tweak the Leica VLux files into making DxO believe these are from a Fz1000 Panasonic.
Of note, renaming RWL files to RW2 won’t work and create a weird “pink/magenta” cast on the picture + distortions.

You’ll need to install Adobe DNG Converter and ExifTool (I use ExifToolGUI more specifically).

1st step: Convert your RWL files to DNG, using Adobe DNG Converter. You can use the latest compatibility (15.3+ in preferences).
2nd step: using ExifToolGUI, delete makernotes from the created DNG files (Modify → Remove Metadata → tick "Exif:MakerNotes).
3rd step: using ExifToolGUI, rename “Make” and “Model” in the Workspace of the DNG files to “Panasonic” and “DMC-FZ1000”.

And voilà ! your DNG files will be recognized in DxO Photolab as TRUE raw files, with optical corrections and Deepprime denoising technologies.
Weirdly, DxO will still put a warning on the picture image browser saying the files are not compatible with DxO, but everything works nonetheless.
Overall a bit tedious but you do the 3 steps in batch so shouldn’t take long if you import photos in a non-too-regular fashion.

On this link https://file.io/J1MS45NKBiBk → you can find the RWL and “tweaked” DNG files for you to see. One is a wide angle to check optical corrections, and the other one is grainy for Deeprime.

Maybe this can help DxO developers to quickly support the Vlux as well! Best,
