Hi not in the newest 9.6 update but why aren’t the sliders instant in Photolab no matter what I do I always get the (Full preview in progress) and it’s kind of aggravating. I’ve seen some videos on YouTube and others don’t have that problem from what I see, Anyways I got a very powerful windows 11 desktop with 32gb RAM, and my Graphics card is the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti. I already went to preferences and set to only use the RTX. Anybody else have this problem? Thanks.
Please welcome to the forum.
I assume you use PL9. I would strongly advice you to install 9.6 update (unless perhaps you are on Windows10 or old 11), since it contains important fixes for NVIDIA GPUs, which affect also performance in certain cases. Check also NVIDIA driver version.
What are your settings in Edit → Preferences → Display for ‘Enable high quality preview’ and ‘Enable DeepPRIME rendering’?
You may prefer using Loupe instead of ‘Enable DeepPRIME rendering’. Some corrections could remain laggy, though.
Which camera do you use?
High MP cameras (e.g. 100mpx GFX100) or X-Trans sensors may require more processing time.
Yes I’ve updated to 9.6 and left everything in preferences at default, As for cameras I use Nikon Z9 and OM-1 Mark II.
Thanks.
Welcome to the forum HotGates.
I can’t offer an easy fix, but I can offer solidarity. My system isn’t as powerful as yours but I do experience the slider lag you speak of - PhotoLab is much less responsive than competitors when editing.
My best advice would be to check what @Wlodek suggests and disable high quality previews and DeepPRIME rendering in the options. However, mine are both set ‘off’ and PL lags anyway.
Next bit of advice is: Do all your global edits first, then any masking. I find masking drastically slows down PL so it’s best to save this for last. If you need to dip back in to global edits, you might even want to disable the masks temporarily then re-enable before export.
If you find PL slows down over time, your best bet is to restart it.
Also try and make sure nothing else is running in the background.
I use Z8, D780, desktop RTX4070/595.79 12GB VRAM, i7-14700KF/32GB RAM, 4K monitor, so it’s quite similar. I have both ‘Viewer quality’ options enabled, often having to edit very noisy photos. You may try to disable both options and use the Loupe tool in emergency cases. Maybe it will help, maybe not…
When I open directory for the first time, typically containing few hundreds of raw files, there is some lag when traversing images. It gets slightly better later due to various caching (previews, precompiled models, etc.) and depends on the type of corrections applied. For “fresh” images with all global corrections being just applied, including DeepPRIME, I may get lag of about 1 sec while switching between Z8 images. With AI masks applied, it usually takes about 3 sec (that’s with both ‘Viewer quality’ options enabled). Not perfect, but I can live with that. While making corrections, the lag is much shorter, unless AI masks are used.
I just now installed 9.6 and it does seem much worse. In addition, my notebook computer is running noticeable hotter – my thermal lap detector reports a deviation from norm.
With regards to the sliders, yes, it is very frustrating. There is no immediate response, then the delay grows a bit, and then you move the sliders again thinking you missed it. Then suddenly the software responds to both commands.
This is utterly frustrating.
Mac M1 64GB main memory.
Is OpenCL enabled in the settings (off by default)?
On my system (notebook with i7 with RTX 4070) Photolab is running quite ‘instant’ when changing sliders or selecting color profiles, etc).
Thanks everyone, It seems that when I uninstalled Photolab and reinstalled it made a big difference, I get a little lag but not much.
I think I have it to only use my graphic card as i thought that would be the fastest, I’ll try your recommendation though, Thanks.
